Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Collection Development & Acquisitions Librarian position. The Collection Development & Acquisitions Librarian is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $71,264 – commensurate with experience. Coordinates the selection, acquisition, and lifecycle of diverse, inclusive, and accessible resources needed by the campus community to further the College’s mission through the library’s collections. Serves as the primary internal and external collection development contact and engages in user-focused, proactive, deliberate collection development of both print and continuing resources. Manages the budget allocation and dispensation of funds for print and electronic materials, and is responsible for managing invoice processing and annual fiscal year rollover. Serves as the top-level advisor on acquisitions questions, and performs higher level acquisitions activities including maintaining vendor relationships, while delegating appropriate tasks. Oversees collection analysis and assessment in order to make data-based decisions regarding the stewardship of the library’s acquisitions budget and its collections.

Summary of Responsibilities

Collection Development

  • Collaborates with Research & Instruction Librarians on the selection and ordering of materials, including facilitating the use of GOBI and providing budget guidance
  • Collaborates with the Electronic Resources & Discovery Librarian on the development and management of serials and electronic resources
  • Takes the lead in creating and maintaining a collection development policy for general collections, including aligning the library’s collection development practices with the community’s teaching and research needs and our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Works closely with the Archives & Special Collections and Digital Initiatives & Web Services departments to ensure a holistic and consistent approach to managing the library’s collections
  • Develops collection analysis and assessment practices in the context of library priorities and campus needs, working with the Head of Collection Management, the Assessment Group, and the Collection Development Group
  • Leads and explores the role of the library’s Collection Development Group
  • Maintains close working relationships with content providers and vendors, as well as campus and consortial partners


  • Manages materials budget and monitors spending of $2 million plus endowed funds
  • Oversees the receipt and reconciling of invoices for physical and electronic materials
  • Supervises 1 FTE staff member
  • Engages with campus community including faculty and students in response to purchases requests and provides guidance to acquisitions staff on responding to complex inquiries



  • Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent
  • Minimum three years relevant library experience
  • Demonstrated familiarity with and interest in current and emerging collection development best practices, including diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in collection management
  • Comprehensive knowledge of library acquisitions standards and tools, including budget management
  • Familiarity with how library resources are accessed and used (preferably in anundergraduate context) and a commitment to removing barriers and advocating for users
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, planning, and project management skills
  • Proven commitment to working closely and collaboratively across organizational boundaries, including a demonstrated history of effectively leading complex collaborative projects and programs involving diverse groups of stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to effectively supporting a broadly diverse and intentionally inclusive community


  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience
  • Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages
  • Familiarity with Workday
  • Experience managing continuing resources
