A Quartet of Black Academics Who Are Taking on New Assignments

Wesley Harris, the Charles Stark Draper Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was elected vice president of the National Academy of Engineering. Professor Harris will step back from teaching full time at MIT but will continue to lead the Hypersonics Research Laboratory.

Dr. Harris is a graduate of the University of Virginia. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is the former dean of engineering at the University of Connecticut and served as associate administrator for aeronautics at NASA.

Shawn Lee Williams was appointed associate dean of law enforcement education at Alexandria Technical and Community College in Minnesota. Prior to this position, he was an assistant professor at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota.

Dr. Williams is a graduate of Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota, where he majored in criminal justice. He went on to earn a master’s degree from St. Cloud State University and a doctorate in educational leadership at Saint Mary’s University in Minneapolis.

Tiffany Steele is a new assistant professor in educational leadership at the University of Rochester in New York. She was an assistant professor in the higher education department at Oakland University in Michigan. Her research centers on the lived experiences of Black girls and women in education, specifically their transition from high school to college.

Dr. Steele is a graduate of the University of Michigan. She earned a Ph.D. in higher education and student affairs from Ohio State University.

Aaron Mallory is a new assistant professor of African and African American studies in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. He was an assistant professor of geography and African American studies at Florida State University.

Dr. Mallory holds a bachelor’s degree in political economy from Evergreen State College in Washington. He earned a Ph.D. in geography with a minor in feminist studies at the University of Minnesota.
