Position Description:

The Department of Nutritional Sciences (NS) seeks an energetic faculty member with demonstrated excellence in the area of Biostatistics to join our growing department of 18 full-time faculty. The successful applicant will contribute to the university’s mission through teaching, research, and service. The person will serve as a faculty member in our accredited graduate programs that include approximately 168 students in doctoral and master’s degrees and our dietetic internship. NS faculty members also have the opportunity to teach in our expanding undergraduate programs (668 students), which includes an accredited didactic program in dietetics. They may also mentor undergraduate research. Duties further include program-building, as well as commitment to extra-curricular activities. Service to the department, college, and university is expected. Candidates who have very strong records of contributing to scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to contribute to bringing externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University are encouraged to apply.


  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, face to face and/or online.
  • Mentor undergraduate, MS and PhD students.
  • Develop and maintain high contributions to the departmental research mission by providing statistical support (e.g., data analysis / reporting / consultation) for faculty and student research (e.g., external funding applications, peer-reviewed publications, and theses / dissertations) and also via independent research as appropriate.
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams in basic, translational, clinical, and community research.
  • Engage in outreach activities. Perform service to the department, college, university, and the profession through involvement and leadership in national and / or international professional associations.

Required Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate with specialization in biostatistics or related areas.
• Demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness and mentoring in research methods, biostatistics and related subjects.
• Demonstrated potential (commensurate with current position title) to engage in externally funded collaborative research projects across the college and university, and with local/regional and national partners including government, corporate, and philanthropic funding agencies.
• Experience in studies relevant to both animal and human subjects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with strong training in biostatistics applied to nutrition, biochemistry, health/biomedical sciences and/or related disciplines.
  • Postdoctoral training or equivalent research experience.
  • Research experience in obesity, diabetes, cancer, epigenetics, microbiome, liver and muscle metabolism and/or other nutrition science-related areas.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.
  • Evidence or potential for training/mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience in relevant statistical and database management platforms (e.g., R, SAS/JMP, STATA, SPSS, Mplus, Matlab and Python.)
  • Demonstrated breadth of theoretical and applied statistical knowledge.

  • Our newly formed Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (NMHI) provides extensive clinical research facilities, equipment and faculty to support the mission to become a nationally recognized clinical research institution. 
  • Texas Tech University houses several core facilities related to basic science research including the Center for Biotechnology and Genomics (CBG), which is a highly collaborative core facility with state-of-the-art instrumentation for genomics, metabolomics and proteomics research.   • The TTU Obesity Research Institute at Texas Tech University
    (ORI; (http://www.depts.ttu.edu/research/obesityresearch/) is a TTU-wide interdisciplinary institute in the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI). The ORI serves as a central collaborative platform for researcher working broadly in obesity-related chronic diseases.
