Job Description:
The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will lead the largest of Le Moyne’s three schools, with particular responsibility for the promotion of academic excellence and the recruitment, evaluation, and development of a faculty committed to outstanding teaching, innovative research, meaningful service, and student success. The dean will work closely with the provost’s office to strengthen existing academic programs and establish new programs that advance the College’s mission through innovative and collaborative teaching and research. Consistent with Le Moyne’s mission to promote a more just society, the dean will foster a commitment to sustainability and equity, diversity, and inclusion in student learning and faculty development outcomes. Le Moyne is currently developing a new strategic plan, and the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will play a key role in achieving institutional goals. Supported by a professional administrative staff, the dean will play a leading role in increasing the value and impact of a liberal arts education for current and future students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Job duties specific to this position:

  • Foster a student-centered environment and advance Le Moyne’s commitment to the liberal arts as the foundation for undergraduate education.
  • Collaborate with department chairs and program directors to improve existing programs of study and develop new programs that meet the needs of a changing society.
  • Provide leadership in achieving and maintaining accreditation from appropriate agencies.
  • Evaluate faculty for tenure and promotion, complete faculty performance reviews, ensure student evaluations of faculty are completed, and coordinate the supervision of new full-time and part-time faculty.
  • Administer budgets, supervise curriculum development, and supervise department chairs and program directors.
  • Serve as a member of the Provost’s Council and President’s Administrative Council and as a non-voting member of the Faculty Senate Executive Board, Academic Rights, Policies and Procedures Committee, and Curriculum Committee.
  • Oversee student learning assessment strategies in departments and programs and participate in the evaluation of academic programs in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Advocate for faculty and student needs when appropriate.
  • Expand the impact of the College of Arts and Sciences through outreach and engagement, cultivating a vibrant, ethical, and open community within the College, and promoting diversity within faculty, staff, and student populations.
  • Develop interdisciplinary activities by building collaborative relationships among academic units and providing opportunities for faculty and staff development.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

  • Performs a variety of related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

EDUCATION: Terminal degree in an appropriate discipline.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Experience as a Department Chairperson, Program Director, Associate Dean or Dean.
  • Faculty rank of Associate Professor (or higher) or a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly activity sufficient to qualify for Full Professor.
  • Commitment to the ideals of affirmative action, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to create an environment that fosters openness, creativity, and excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service.
  • Strong communication and personnel management skills.
  • Support for pedagogical and programmatic innovations in higher education.
  • Commitment to collaborative governance within the College of Arts and Sciences and Le Moyne College as a whole.
  • Commitment to Le Moyne’s Mission Statement and strategic plan and ability to promote them within academic affairs.
  • Proven ability to motivate for change.
  • Knowledge of and experience with assessment strategies for program improvement.
  • Ability and desire to conduct ceremonies and public celebrations.
