The Student Affairs Specialist works independently to handle all administrative aspects of the PhD program in the Department of Physics. The incumbent works directly with the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), the Department Chair, the Graduate School, and the Registrar among other offices on campus to implement curricular directives and mandates to meet program goals.

The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to maintain pipelines to Graduate Schools and to provide support around Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) issues related to the graduate programs within the department.

This position works closely with the Academic Department Manager and other staff members to ensure faculty and students are supported and attend Commencement Weekend

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of administrative experience, or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent administrative and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with event planning and scheduling.
  • Demonstrated ability to use judgment and discretion while working independently or with a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize between a variety of often competing demands.
  • Client-centered orientation with impeccable customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft and Google programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
