Job Description:

The Senior Writer supports the work of the Brown University School of Public Health (SPH)’s advancement team and communications team to increase the School’s reach, visibility and impact by producing high-quality written materials in a variety of formats including articles, opinion pieces, media talking points and topical explainers, press releases, and content for the web and social media. Reporting to the Director of Communications and the advancement leadership, the Senior Writer works in close collaboration with the content team and faculty partners, skillfully weaving evidence, narrative, policy relevance, and public health significance. The senior writer also works across teams to take the lead on reports and other written outputs produced with strategic partners, including Brown University bodies, policy think tanks, and other organizations engaging in public health work.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’ degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional research, writing, and editing experience.
  • Experience working for a university, newspaper or website, or nonprofit organization preferred.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to convert broad and abstract public health concepts into concrete, compelling, relevant and accurate narratives in a variety of styles for diverse audiences and platforms, including for social media and websites.
  • Strong research, writing, and interviewing skills required.
  • Strong editorial judgment.
  • Comprehensive editing skills, from story editing to line and copy editing.
  • Considerable flexibility, with an ability to juggle multiple assignments while meeting hard deadlines, required.
  • Ability to write for digital content and social media required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects that involve multiple team members, working across teams and units and managing priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong capacity for creativity and collaboration.
  • Ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
