Job Description:

The Research Assistant position involves husbandry work with mice in specialized barrier housing that includes germ-free bubble isolators, individual isolator cages, and sterile biosafety cabinets. All animal work is performed aseptically. This position will work closely with researchers in the Vaishnava lab and participate in the design and expansion of the gnotobiotic program.

The Vaishnava lab studies how to maintain peaceful relations with 100 trillion bacteria in our intestine. ​ The lab uses unique i​n-vivo ​tools such as germ-free mouse models in combination with a broad array of genetic, cell biological and biochemical approaches to explore the interactions between intestinal bacteria and our immune system.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 04/30/2024 which may be extended based upon available funding.

Grade 7 Job Qualifications
Education and Experience
Required:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Biological sciences or related discipline.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

  • Relevant undergraduate experience in a laboratory.
  • Experience with mouse husbandry, breeding, genotyping
  • Experience with microbiological techniques and basic molecular biology techniques.

Grade 8 Job Qualifications
Education and Experience
Required:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Biological sciences or related discipline and 1 – 2 years of related research experience.
  • Relevant undergraduate experience in a laboratory.
  • Experience with microbiological techniques and basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience with mouse husbandry, breeding, genotyping.

Job Competencies

  • Must be willing to work with mice as an experimental model.
  • Basic knowledge of biology/microbiological monitoring (sample collection, bacterial culture).
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to animals and animal byproducts and bedding for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be organized and able to maintain a clean working area.
  • Must interact well with other laboratory personnel, with members of the University community, and with outside vendors.
  • Candidates must possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
  • Regular communication in person and via text/email with researchers.
  • Ability to work well with a small but diverse team.
