Job Description:

The Research Assistant will have three overarching primary responsibilities within the Holder laboratory: (1) oversee laboratory organization, (2) serve as a ready, able, and willing resource for undergraduate and graduate students, and (3) assist with conducting independent experiments within broader research projects. The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the technical activities, experimental protocols, and infrastructure of Dr. Sheldon Holder’s research group in relation to the operation of his research laboratory. The individual who fills this position will act as a technical resource to lab researchers, including undergraduate and graduate students, to develop and/or resolve technical issues in line with their research goals. These responsibilities will include planning and troubleshooting common lab experiments such as Western Blots, PCR, cell culture, and ELISA. The Research Assistant will assist with conducting laboratory experiments as the major job function. In addition, the position will also troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and equipment and evaluate and procure material and equipment for lab personnel. The Research Assistant will also monitor compliance with institution biosafety regulations. Additionally, the Research Assistant will assist with performing independent experiments yielding high quality results to be included in manuscript submissions and grant applications.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 09/30/2023, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Education and Experience

Required

  • A bachelor’s degree and prior experience or extensive coursework involving working in a molecular and cellular biology laboratory is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience (grade 7).
  • A bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and a minimum of 1-2 years of post-undergraduate experience in a molecular and cellular biology laboratory is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience (grade 8).

Job Competencies

  • Ability to support the lab group and to interact with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Excellent organizational, record keeping, task prioritization, and report preparation skills.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills, ability to implement solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of fluorescence microscopy, cell culture, and molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience and robust competency working with small animals (eg. mice, rats).
  • Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to present complex data in clear presentations.
  • Computer proficiency in MAC and PC.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data.
  • Ability to work independently as well as attention to detail.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
