Job Description:

Brown University Athletics is currently seeking candidates for the Men’s Rugby Coaching Assistant position.  Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 34 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-D1) and 37 club sports teams.

This position will assist the head coach in coaching all positions, forwards and backs, in both 7’s and 15’s with a primary focus being balkline play.  This is a part-time 9-month position, scheduled to work up to 25 hours per week.

Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach and develop individual, unit and team techniques and skills, as defined by the head coach.  This will include the implementation of team systems both offensive and defensive
  • Develop and improve individual skills related to position specific roles
  • Assist with strength & conditioning, as defined by the head coach.
  • Assist with coaching the 7s team, as defined by the head coach.
  • Assist with coaching the 15s team, as defined by the head coach.
  • Travel with the team to away events and matches.
  • Some administrative tasks may be required to assist the head coach with organizational operations.

Entry into the candidate pool requires the following:

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 3-5 years of Rugby playing experience, at least five (5) years, preferred.
  • 3-5 years of Rugby coaching experience preferred; preferably with both 15s and 7s at the collegiate level, the club level, or higher.
  • USA Rugby Level 200 Coaching Certification (or equivalent).  Will consider those working towards their level 200


This position places a heavy focus on developing the more competitive players involved in the program, specifically the backs.  The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a strong understanding of, and the ability to coach, the fundamentals of the game.
  • Possess a strong understanding of technique and skill as it relates to the scrum half, flyhalf, center, wing and full back positions.
  • Ability to work with larger groups of athletes independently or with little assistance.
  • Demonstrated experience with player identification, and the assessment of abilities
  • Knowledge of film analysis is not required however is helpful in this role.
  • Technical knowledge and experience coaching introductory principles of Rugby required.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Rugby referee experience/registration, helpful.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • The ability to work a computer (word documents, excel spreadsheets)
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.

All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA and Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the appropriate parties.  Employees in coaching positions are required to pass the NCAA Coaches Certification Test, maintain current AED/CPR & First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division), and attend all required divisional and/or NCAA training/education programs.
