Brown University — Communications Specialist

Job Description:

The Communications Specialist works closely with the Director of Communications and the Editorial Manager in the development of written and visual content for all communications outputs for the School of Public Health and its Centers and Departments. This includes but is not limited to e-communications, websites, social media channels, as well as presentations and events. The position will assist in creating and disseminating content as well as providing support in the day-to-day operation and strategy for communications initiatives for the School. The Communications Specialist will monitor and oversee the School’s social media channels. The incumbent will write news articles, develop and enhance content across platforms (print, social media, web and digital), and provide web content management services to the School and its Centers and Departments.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree and at least three to five years of experience working in editorial and media production
  • Proven experience in social media strategy and execution
  • Prior experience utilizing visual editing tools, such as Canva or the Adobe Suite (PS, ID, AI)
  • Prior experience working on web platforms such as WordPress and Drupal

Job Competencies

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience working in visual editing platforms such as Adobe (PS, ID, AI) or Canva
  • Experience interfacing with social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram
  • Strong sense of design and visual balance
  • Organized, with project management skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Fluency in full suite of Adobe design software (PS, ID, AI), Microsoft suite, Drupal content management, social media platforms
  • Knowledge of WordPress and Drupal a plus
  • Strong research skills
  • Knowledge of and interest in public health a plus
  • Ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
