Communications Technician II
Office of Information Technology 

The Communications Technician II installs and maintains campus infrastructures for data and voice. The Communications Technician II is responsible for delivering end level user support for a broad range of communications equipment and services. This position will be responsible for supporting various components of the communications network including but not limited to the installation and maintenance of structured cabling (copper and fiber optic), network electronics (routers, switches, UPS’s, wireless access points), and telephony services (phones, gateways). Responsible for updating documentation and floor plans for installed inventory. This position will be required to provide direct support for facilities building construction and renovation projects.


  • Associates/Bachelors degree preferred
  • 2-3 years of related Telecommunications experience
  • Industry certifications are beneficial

Job Qualifications/Experience 

  • Prior experience with structured wiring and computing services in a LAN environment, including specific experience with unshielded twisted pair and fiber.
  • Broad understanding of wired/wireless networks and network management tools.
  • Broad knowledge of Voice over IP and analog telephone.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use common software applications such as Google Suite.
  • Provides excellent customer service by listening to and resolving concerns and answering questions accordingly.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Organized & detail oriented
  • Possess a valid driver’s license (required)
  • Possess a valid Telecommunications license from the State of Rhode Island (required)
  • The ability to travel on foot, climb ladders and stairs
  • The ability to move/lift approximately 50 lbs of heavy equipment (required)
  • The ability to work in confined spaces and receive proper training for confined space entry (required)
  • Demonstrates a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment

This is a 1 year fixed-term staff position, with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding
