Job Description:

The Assistant Director, Community-Engaged Research Programs is responsible for the oversight, strategy, and management of a portfolio of programs and functional areas in the Swearer Center. The position contributes leadership and oversight of Swearer Center’s research programs, initiatives, and cross-campus efforts. The position develops and manages strategies and systems that scale and connect community-engaged research to other areas of the Swearer Center.

The Assistant Director will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and rigor of the curricular, co-curricular, and experiential learning dimensions of relevant programs; developing outreach and recruitment strategies and managing application processes; and supporting documentation, assessment, and communications functions related to the programs. The Assistant Director will also work with Swearer Center and other university colleagues to cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships internal and external to Brown.

The Assistant Director is responsible for multiple programs in the Center, which may include but are not limited to: undergraduate research fellowships, undergraduate and graduate research grants and awards, and coordination with faculty and community-based research initiatives.  The position may include responsibility for teaching an undergraduate course aligned with the Swearer Center’s engaged scholarship programs and/or responsibility for new efforts that are developed in an ongoing way by the Swearer Center.

The position may supervise 1-4 Swearer staff members, AmeriCorps VISTA member(s), graduate and undergraduate student employees, and reports to a Director-level position. Decisions made by this position can impact programs, functional areas within the Swearer Center, and some portfolio-specific decisions may impact the University. The position provides feedback and direction to community-engaged research programs and initiatives in regard to budgets, goals, tasks, and overall strategy.

Qualifications

  • Required:  BA and 5-7 years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred:  Master’s or terminal degree in a relevant field; experience with (community-engaged) research design, ethics, and implementation.
  • Understanding of higher education context and the goals of Brown undergraduate education; solid understanding of Brown’s culture and educational philosophy.
  • Proven experience with research design, ethics, mentoring, and evaluation. Prior knowledge of community-engaged research (e.g. community-based participatory research; participatory action research; activist research).
  • Strong skills in program management and assessment.
  • Interest in and ability to engage, collaborate with, support, and educate undergraduate students. Demonstrable skills and experience in facilitation and student advising.
  • Experience working collaboratively and effectively with partners within higher education and in the public and non-profit sectors. Ability to build collaborations with diverse communities.
  • Intellectually curious and open-minded. Capable of thoughtfully identifying issues and opportunities, and articulating strategies to pursue them.
  • Proven track record in furthering university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while supporting students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized backgrounds is required.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills. Detail-orientation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to generate enthusiasm and understanding with a variety of audiences and partners.
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend events/programs, including some holidays.
