Job Description:
The Subject Librarian for Visual and Performing Arts serves as the liaison for departments of Art and Design, Art History, Music and Theater. Other subject assignments are possible based on qualifications and need. The incumbent is a member of a dynamic team pioneering the development of innovative library resources and services for a diverse constituency of students, faculty, researchers and the community. The position works creatively and collaboratively to develop unique collections, provide instructional services, and play an active role in the planning and decision-making process of the Libraries through meetings, special projects and programs supporting a user-centered approach to services. The incumbent participates in the promotion of library outreach and engagement activities, Special Collections and Scholarly Communications, and will also work on special projects related to collection development and management.

The position reports to the Sr. Director for Outreach, Engagement and Collections. Tenure-track librarians at Binghamton University are members of the faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the library liaison for the departments of Art & Design, Art History, Music and Theater.
  • Assess, develop and manage the collections, electronic resources and subject web pages in support of teaching and research in assigned subject areas.
  • Provide individual research consultations; provide and promote specialized research and instruction services to students and faculty working in assigned subject areas.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of emerging trends in the field as they relate to research assistance, instruction and collection services.
  • Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Participate in library and university committees.
  • Pursue scholarly growth through participation in professional library and bibliographic organizations, research, presentations, and publication
  • Responsibility for additional subject areas may be assigned.


  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, performing arts or a related field; or previous experience in one of the assigned subject areas.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and as a team member in developing services and resources.
  • Strong commitment to service and professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and build partnerships with faculty and staff in a culturally diverse community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and anti-racism and working to advance a workplace culture that strives to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Proven problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience or additional degree in a field related to job responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of one or more non-English languages.
  • Experience in engagement, instruction or collection development in assigned subject areas.
