Position Summary
The person in this position is responsible for:
- Developing, researching, writing, and editing accurate and interesting stories to be distributed electronically and in print via university publications, the news media and the university website in order to deliver key messages to external and internal audiences.
- Distributing news releases and media advisories to local, state and regional media outlets; assisting members of media outlets in doing stories about WCU employees, students, programs and events; and maintaining and updating our faculty/staff experts database.
- Working with the university’s marketing team to plan and create branded content that is optimized for all channels including print, online, email, mobile, video and in-person.
- Assisting with development, writing, and editing copy for various brochures, flyers, ads, student recruitment pieces, and other collateral print materials.
- Other duties as needed.
- Some night and weekend work required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
This position requires an experienced, adaptable, highly productive, independent-style, creative writer/editor who can transform university goals into compelling stories that engage audiences and elicit specific behaviors; outstanding information-gathering, copy-editing, proof-reading and writing skills; exceptional knowledge of correct spelling and grammar; strong organizational and project management skills to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously; acute attention to detail for maximum accuracy in proof reading and editing; proven ability to meet deadlines; exceptional knowledge of rules of grammar and usage; proficiency in the use of standards set by the Associated Press Stylebook; ability to work with a diverse team of writers, editors, photographers and designers and the diplomacy and leadership skills needed to get the wordsmiths, visual artists and graphic artists to be able not only to play nice with one another, but also to use their combined talents to create a product of the utmost in quality. Experience in a higher education setting and experience as editor of a publication are preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be
received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a higher education setting and developing relationships with media members.
