Six Black Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions

David Marshall has been named dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Savannah State University in Georgia. He was chair of the department of strategic communication in the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Dr. Marshall earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and philosophy from Morgan State University. He holds a master’s degree in journalism and a doctorate in mass media and communication from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Andrew Chin was appointed interim dean of the School of Architecture and Engineering Technology at Florida A&M University. He has been serving as associate dean. Chin joined the university’s faculty in 1991.

Chin holds a bachelor’s degree in design and a master of architecture degree from the University of Florida. He earned a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Florida State University.

Janelle L. West was appointed interim dean of the Center for Graduate and Continuing Studies at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Since 2019, she has served as associate dean and a member of the faculty in the university’s Center for Education.

Dr. West is a graduate of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in business administration. She holds a master of public administration degree from Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg and a master’s degree and a doctorate in higher education leadership from Widener University.

Dara N. Byrne will be the fourth dean of the Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York. Since 2016, she has been associate provost for undergraduate retention and dean of undergraduate studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, her academic home since 2003.

Dr. Byrne earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Carleton Univerity in Ottawa, Canada. She holds a Ph.D. in rhetoric and intercultural communication from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Christopher D. Card will join Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, on August 15 as vice president and dean of students. He has served as vice president for student life at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, since 2017.

A native of Jamaica, Card is a graduate of Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He earned a master’s degree in law and diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

Elimelda Moige Ongeri is the new dean of the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University. She has served in the position on an interim basis since October 1. Previously Dr. Ongeri was associate dean for research and innovation and has been a professor of physiology in the college’s department of kinesiology.

Professor Ongeri earned a bachelor’s degree in animal production from Egerton University in Njoro, Kenya. She holds a master’s degree in comparative mammalian physiology from the University of Nairobi in Kenya and a master’s degree in basic medical sciences and a Ph.D. in animal physiology, both from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Dr. Mott was a lecturer in the department of history and Center for Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University where she worked for the past sixteen years. Her academic studies focused on racial language in American popular culture.

California State University Sacramento Launches Black Honors College

Officially launching for the fall 2024 semester, the Black Honors College will support students from all backgrounds who study Black history, life, and culture by providing them with a specialized curriculum and mentoring opportunities.
