A Trio of African Americans Who Will Be Taking on New Roles Relating to Diversity

Anya Dani is joining the interdepartmental program in the conservation of cultural heritage at the University of California, Los Angeles in a newly created position: director of community engagement and inclusive practice. Most recently, she has been conducting a detailed conservation survey at the Stanford University Archaeology Collections. From 2011 to 2021, Dani led an art conservation program at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology

Born in California, Dani grew up primarily in Delaware, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art conservation at the University of Delaware.

Sean Bennett will serve as the inaugural vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Most recently, he served in a similar role at Salem State University in Massachusetts. Earlier, Dr. Bennett served 10 years as an assistant dean, and three years as director of the Multicultural Center for Academic Success at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Dr. Bennett will assume his new responsibilities at Hamilton on August 16.

Dr. Bennett is a graduate of Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, where he majored in electrical engineering. He holds master’s degrees in education from SUNY-Brockport and Harvard University and a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.

Ken James is the inaugural chief diversity officer at Muskegon Community College in Michigan. He is the former director of affirmative action for the city of Muskegon and most recently was director of inclusion at the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce.

James obtained a bachelor’s degree from Kentucky State University and holds a master’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.
