Position Focus:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Internal Communications, the Editorial Director is responsible for leading the teams that create content across multiple digital channels (email, digital signage, video, photography, and social), including the It's Your Yale website. This Director relies on research and insights to develop a content strategy that a) amplifies the president's and campus' operational priorities b) informs and inspire the Yale community; c) attracts the finest talent in the world to join the institution; d) engages and retains Yale's existing talent across the staff community. In addition to leading the editorial and creative teams within Internal Communications, this position works closely with the Director of Recognition and Engagement and the Director of Strategic Communication to support their editorial needs.

This position may require remote work on either a regular or temporary, part-time or full-time basis.

Essential Duties:
1. Establish an editorial strategy for OPAC that connects presidential priorities with insights on Yale’s key audiences. 2. Build and manage a “beat” structure for OPAC’s writers. 3. Lead the creation of editorial calendars, to be maintained daily by a key staffer on the team. 4. Set high standards for OPAC writing; work closely with writers to ensure those standards are met. 5. Launch and manage a powerful flow of content from Yale News, to Yale News email, to social media. 6. Ensure excellence in video, photography, and illustration across platforms. 7. Collaborate closely with peers, including the Directors of Audience Insights, Digital Strategy, and Media Relations to ensure strategic messaging consistency, as well as excellence across platforms and content. 8. Assist the Vice President and the Director of Media Relations in crisis management. 9. Manage and mentor members of the editorial staff to set individual goals and development plans. 10. Maintain organizational and resource balance, including identifying budgeting and hiring needs proactively. 11. Convene editorial leadership from across Yale in order to a) ensure Yale’s main editorial platforms feature excellent content from across the university, and b) offer guidance to leaders of editorial content featured on non-OPAC platforms across the university. 12. Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree and seven years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Extremely strong skills in writing and editing. Demonstrated organizational talent: planning, directing, and assembling teams, and working wisely in a fast-paced environment.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Exceptional judgment, reliability, and discretion. Ability to thrive in a role that requires the establishment of cheerful consensus among many, and across offices. Experience building productive relationships through interaction with faculty and staff.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Experience creating and executing content strategy, as well as implementing content on all platforms, from web to email to social media.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Familiarity with an audience-centered approach to content and the data analytics such an approach requires.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Familiarity with the academic culture and the processes and policies of an educational institution.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
