SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs crossing the Humanities, Arts, Social and Natural Sciences. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university's largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Facilities and Capital Planning (FCP) team plans, builds, and manages facilities and physical space within the School of Humanities and Sciences in support of teaching, research and creative expression for students, faculty, and staff. Our mission and vision focus on providing leadership and expertise to create and support a culture of safety and maximize space utilization through thoughtful planning, programming, and project management.

FCP supports teaching and research within H&S, which utilizes over one million square feet of space distributed over more than 60 buildings. The school's geographical reach extends to Stanford in Washington and the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Physical space and facilities are integral to Stanford's excellence in teaching and research. As pedagogy and research needs evolve, the FCP team responds to them. We are responsible for-and dedicated to-helping support a new generation of scholars across the school, whether they are chemists in a wet lab or pianists in a music studio.

We provide expertise in program and project management and facilities planning using tools and processes to proactively drive our business forward. In support of our mission, FCP seeks a knowledgeable and proven Health and Safety Specialist who can perform and manage complex technical work across a wide range of environmental, health and safety (EH&S) disciplines. This will further ensure a safe work environment and reinforce our ability to continue to achieve compliance with the University's EH&S standards and regulatory requirements. This role will closely partner with the university EH&S department, guide the FCP project team, and support H&S departments and programs to continue to build upon a culture of safety.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
  • Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of health and safety programs.
  • Manage and support emergency planning for H&S working with multiple stakeholders, departments and programs to ensure and develop business continuity and provide regular table top exercises in preparation for an emergency event.
  • Work with teams in understanding local and regional long-term compliance practices and implementing new program developments.
  • Apply advanced knowledge and forward-thinking practices to act on regulation changes and meet regulatory timelines.
  • Partner with EH&S subject matter experts and develop environmental, health, and safety program elements to enhance compliance and auditing within laboratories and facilities with a focus on OSHA and EPA policies, NIH biosafety guidelines, as well as Stanford University guidelines, policies, and best practices. Specifically, work closely with clients to ensure compliant practices and respond timely to client inquires. Coach leaders to be visible EH&S advocates.
  • Provide guidance and safety training support to facility, staff, and students to ensure understanding of compliance expectations and best practices.
  • Ensure timely and accurate content is available on the FCP Health and Safety website to the H&S community.
  • Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.
  • Perform internal audits to monitor program effectiveness and external government inspections, compliance follow-up, and reporting.
  • Deliver accurate documentation and provide clear communications with clients, team members, regulators and/or other stakeholders, which can be in the form of small and large group presentations, complex reports, spreadsheets, webinars, and webpage content.
  • Work with FCP project management teams to ensure safety and environmental compliance in building renovations and projects. Ensure best practices, University guidelines, and regulations are followed for securing equipment, hazardous materials storage and use, environmental processes, signage, etc. Apply advanced safety knowledge and innovative thinking to fold in new technologies and methodologies in lab research.
  • Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the work area. Work with facilities operations, laboratory operations staff, and department and program management on resolving safety and environmental issues expeditiously and that compliance challenges are fully remediated.
  • Ensure timely and thorough delivery of work assignments. Prioritize and verify work project completions to improve efficiency and expectations. Lead by example the use of personal protective equipment, safety awareness, and demonstrate strong behavioral competencies.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace. Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
  • May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing environmental and/or safety programs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A solid understanding of chemistry, physics and biology, specifically in areas relating to research and teaching.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of occupational environmental health and safety with preferably a master's degree and professional certification in the EHS field.
  • Experience with developing safety management systems and applying continuous improvement approaches to EH&S programs.
  • Must be able to independently problem-solve solutions to a wide range of circumstances in a complex organization.
  • Ability to exercise tact and have superior diplomatic and inter-personal skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented. Knowledge of computer systems, applications, and web page management.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP), or other relevant professional certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
  • Demonstrated supervisory/coaching expertise.

Certifications and Licenses:

Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.
