New Duties for a Trio of Black Scholars

Arwin Smallwood, the Carter G. Woodson Distinguished Lecturer and a professor of history at North Carolina A&T State University, has been given the added duties of interim vice provost for undergraduate education. Earlier, he served as chair of the department of history and political science at the university.

Dr. Smallwood is a graduate of North Carolina Central in Durham, where he majored in political science. He earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University.

Courtney-Savali Andrews has been named an assistant professor of African American and African diasporic music at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. The appointment follows a two-year period in which Dr. Andrews served as a visiting assistant professor of ethnomusicology at Oberlin, a role in which she taught courses in both the college and conservatory.

Dr. Andrews is a graduate of Oberlin College, where she majored in piano performance and Africana studies. She holds a doctorate in musical direction for theater and opera from Arizona State University and is completing work on a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Victoria University of New Zealand.

Jerelle Joseph was appointed an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at Princeton University. She will begin teaching at the university in January. She is a junior research fellow at King’s College at the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Joseph earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of the West Indies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in England.
