Miami University — Senior Graphic Designer

Then look no further and apply to be part of the University Communications and Marketing team as a senior graphic designer. You will need to be a strategic thinker, creator, problem-solver, and visual storyteller of our brand. You will assist the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Creative Director, and Director of Brand Strategy and Management in mapping out the development and implementation of the university’s campaign concept across its core audiences while also educating the university community about how to use the brand. Other times, you’ll bring the brand to life visually on integrated marketing and communications materials as the project lead.

The Senior Graphic Designer will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on the implementation of the brand. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of design principles, typography, and a well-formed design aesthetic that can be translated into a strategic vision for how to effectively implement a brand across a large, dynamic institution.

They will be expected to meet project timelines and provide detail-oriented feedback to ensure completion of projects. The successful candidate will be able to interpret creative feedback from/to colleagues who do not report directly to them and will drive results while keeping projects on track.

This position is approved for remote work on a hybrid basis. Remote work is not a right, but a working arrangement that can be modified or revoked by Miami University at any time for any reason

Job Duties:

Leadership

  • Serve as a project lead on cross-functional project work and ensuring alignment to the strategic vision of the brand
  • Oversee graphic design interns
  • Seek out leadership training opportunities to continually hone leadership skills

Vendor Management

  • Serve as a primary design point of contact for all brand work with the university’s marketing and branding agency
    Brand
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the university’s brand, promotional campaigns, athletics, and academic division sub-brands
  • Manage, maintain, and direct the implementation of the university’s brand resources, such as Canva, including working with the design team on the continued development of brand resources
  • Partner with the Director of Brand Management and Strategy to manage the brand approval process and coordinate all aspects of the process with the various stakeholders across UCM (University Communications and Marketing) and the university.
    Design
  • Work closely with the Creative Director to ensure all designs created by UCM’s design team align with design principles and brand standards
  • Communicate innovative brand ideas to stakeholders in clear, concise ways to internal stakeholders
  • Ability serve as lead designer on projects, art direct photo shoots, and communicate a clear, strategic design point of view on design projects

Mentorship

  • Mentor UCM’s interns.
  • Seek out mentorship from marketing and design professionals either internally or externally to ensure that the university’s design team is staying up-to-date with current trends. 
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Five or more years’ experience

This position is available to persons who are currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time and indefinite basis. (Persons authorized to work on such a basis include US citizens, lawful permanent residents (“green card” holders), asylees, refugees, and temporary residents under IRCA.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two to three (2-3) years’ experience in the development and implementation of a large brand system, preferably for a higher ed institution. 
  • Experience presenting design concepts to internal and external stakeholders  
  • Highly creative, curious, and imaginative
  • Knowledge of Adobe XD or After Effects a bonus but not required
  • Experience crafting campaigns and brand experiences for digital, print, email, social, out-of-home
  • Collaborator who works and builds relationships across teams and projects 
  • Excellent communicator, can clearly articulate brand and design decisions, ideas, and vision 
  • Customer service skills; meets individuals where they are at and works to solve problems that will meet everyone’s goals while elevating the brand
  • Knowledgeable of Microsoft tools (specifically Word and Powerpoint)
  • Comfortable creating and collaborating in the Google Workspace
  • Self-motivated and well organized
  • Keen attention to detail

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise with the Adobe Creative Suite, such as InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Illustrator.
