American University — Term Faculty in Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science of the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment for Academic Year 2022-2023. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. The appointment is 9-month position and will commence on August 29, 2022. The position is potentially renewable.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester (fall and spring), including Computer Science I and II sections and, if comfortable, sections of our Computer Science III course or sections of our engineering-style lab-based computer organization course. The successful candidate may also teach our Computer Science courses for non-majors: Creative Coding or Programming for Data Analysis. CS I is a Python-based course that serves as an introduction to the computer science major, CS II is a Python-based introduction to data structures and object-oriented programing, and CS III is our C/C++ based systems programming course. Creative Coding uses a graphical programming environment such as p5.js (using JavaScript) or Processing (using Java or Python). Programming for Data Analysis is a Python-based course that introduces the students to packages useful for data analysis such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib and SciKit-learn Alternatively, one of these courses could be replaced by another course of the candidate’s interest available in the department. The successful candidate will be expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.

The Computer Science Department offers both a BS and a MS in computer science. The undergraduate major has been experiencing rapid growth, and as of Fall 2021 the department had 112 students registered as majors, 30 as minors, and 14 MS students. Learn more about the department at
