Detailed Job Description
In the role of Research Computing Facilitator II, you will be an integral part of the Research Computing team responsible for providing advanced computing support for RIT researchers. You will assist researchers with accessing Research Computing services, like batch processing with SLURM, data storage on our Ceph cluster, and implementing computational workflows. You will also assist with the development of documentation and training for researchers on the use of Research Computing services.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate collaboration and coordination of research computing activities; regularly engage a broad set of researchers through support requests
  • Consults with researchers to determine needs. Provide assistance, training, and information on available research computing services; develop documentation and training materials for researchers
  • Connect, coordinate, and facilitate interactions between researchers and service providers
  • Provides high level consultation and expertise on data management, data processing, research computing workflows, and analytics for RIT researchers.
  • Support and consult on grant proposal preparation; provide regular communications and outreach to campus and external research communities.
  • Performs computerized data processing operations and statistical analyses of research data. Performs computing programming, debugging, and documentation; assists in interpretation and reporting of results.
  • Actively solve problems and enhance learning with full awareness of internal and external research computing landscapes
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

As a Research Computing Facilitator II, you are expected to be a fully competent and productive contributor who applies acquired research computing job skills and experience to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks. Problems and issues faced are of moderate scope and complexity and are varied, vague, and may require understanding of a broader set of issues and various research areas. Requires experienced/practical knowledge and skills in cluster computing, advanced computing, computational workflows, research computing facilitation, mathematics/statistics, etc, and works toward development and obtainment of expertise in at least one technology, product, program, or process area as it relates to research computing. Works independently under limited supervision with ability to self-direct work and work may span other work areas and departments. May lead projects and be responsible for providing guidance, coaching and training to other employees within research computing.

Required Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

  • 2 to 4 years of research computing, computer programming, or other related experience.
  • Experience with Linux operating system
  • Experience with supporting computer usage in an academic/lab environment
  • Experience with computer programming

Preferred Skils/Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree
  • Experience with research computing facilitation
  • Experience with cluster batch computing (SLURM, OpenPBS)
  • Experience with computational workflows involving deep learning, molecular modeling, or genomics
  • Experience with software packaging/installation (spack)
  • Experience with statistical or mathematical modeling
