Overview

Princeton University invites applications and nominations for an experienced and innovative leader to serve as the University Registrar. The Registrar must operate and lead in a quickly changing, entrepreneurial, and collaborative University culture. The Registrar is charged with stewarding academic records and information for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty.

Responsibilities

The Registrar maintains campus-wide integrity of student data and provides accurate and timely information to support decision-making, core business needs in other units, and the University’s strategic planning and assessment initiatives. The Registrar also manages classroom space. The successful candidate will ensure that the Office of the Registrar provides the highest level of service to faculty, students, and cross-campus administrative units through its careful stewardship of student records and its efficient and effective communication of information.

The Registrar reports to the Provost, with close working relationships with the Dean of the College and the Dean of the Graduate School and their teams. The Registrar currently oversees a staff of fifteen, with responsibilities ranging across classroom management, course scheduling, and data collection and reporting, using PeopleSoft as the primary Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system coupled with an Oracle-based information warehouse. The Registrar has multiple points of contact, including the Offices of Admissions, Undergraduate Financial Aid, and Finance and Treasury, as well as academic departments, faculty, and staff responsible for academic advising and curricular management. The Registrar’s team also works closely with the Office of Information Technology to support, modify, and upgrade student record systems.

The Registrar supports the academic mission of the university and plays an advisory role on academic policy matters through ex officio positions on faculty committees on Examinations and Standing and the Course of Study. The Registrar currently serves as secretary to the Faculty Committee on Classrooms and Schedule. As needed, the Registrar is also called upon to advise the Curriculum Subcommittee of the Faculty Committee on the Graduate School.

The Registrar ensures the integrity and appropriate confidentiality of academic records, has oversight of the scheduling of courses and classrooms, and tracks academic policies related to curricular requirements. The Registrar also oversees academic registration, honors, and awards; the scheduling of exams; the processing and reporting of grades; the tracking of graduate student completion of non-course based program requirements; degree audits and enrollment verification. The Registrar provides transcripts, prepares diplomas, and reports data about the staffing, formats, and evaluation of courses. The Registrar is responsible for reporting University information to state and federal agencies as well as external organizations, including the National Student Clearinghouse.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent managerial skills. Superior data management and analysis capabilities will be essential, as well as the ability to communicate effectively within a complex University organizational structure, including in partnership with academic units and individual faculty and students. Direct experience with an integrated student administrative system is required.

Candidates should be knowledgeable about accepted higher education practices, FERPA, and other relevant federal and state policies and requirements.

Experience applying and developing policies and practices related to non-traditional student populations and non-standard academic offerings is preferred.

An advanced degree and a substantial record of professional accomplishment leading a comparable office in a liberal arts college or research university is required. At least seven years of managerial experience, including substantial experience as a Registrar or Associate Registrar, is strongly preferred.
