Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Chief of Operations (COO) serves as both a collaboration partner and liaison within the academic leadership team and administrative staff. The COO assumes a wide variety of duties of considerable scope and complexity, managing multiple ongoing projects requiring high-level skills in communication, collaboration, initiative, independent judgment, and knowledge of the university's academic programs and organizational processes. In addition, the COO independently plans researches, implements, and provides recommendations to the Provost on the division's initiatives supporting 179 departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently oversee the coordination of projects and activities at the direction of the Provost.
  • Serve as primary liaison within the leadership team and administrative staff.
  • Develop strong partnerships and collaborations with individuals both within and outside of Academic Affairs to achieve the aims of the division.
  • Provide standing support to the Provost in meetings with the Deans Council, Senior Leadership team (Vice Provosts and Associate Vice Presidents) and Provost's Council (combined councils).

    Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, and successfully direct special/ad hoc projects. Demonstrated expertise in higher education and/or organizational management, project management skills, and savvy interpersonal abilities. Ability to establish goals and follow through on implementation while working with a high degree of self-direction. Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and diversity and working in diverse environments. Experience in working in a high-level or executive management office. Strong organization, administrative, analytical skills, and professionalism reflective of the needs and concerns of the Provost. Ability to manage multiple work streams, respond rapidly to competing demands and prioritize needs on an ongoing basis. Strong project management skills with ability to advance initiatives at both the detail and big-picture levels. Ability to maintain the highest level of integrity, discretion, and management of confidential information. Ability to work effectively in collegial, consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork. Ability to thrive in the midst of change and/or ambiguity.

    Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.     Education and Experience
    Required Qualifications
    Graduate level degree from a 4-year college or university. A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience with higher education, public policy, and/or related field and a minimum of 5 years management experience.

    Essential Qualifications:
    Given the complexity and sensitivity of information the COO will encounter daily, the successful candidate must demonstrate excellent judgment and foresight, the ability to exercise discretion as needed, institutional and situational intelligence, and the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    An advanced/terminal degree in organizational management, higher education, or a related field. Experience with statistical analysis programs.Experience with combinations of various statistical, presentation, graphics development and/or data visualization programs. Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic operating plans.Work experience with a large, unionized university environment
