This search is occurring at an exciting time in Bridgewater State University’s work for racial equity and forms of social justice. Bridgewater State University is a recognized leader in our institutional mission class for closing equity gaps in graduation rates for racially minoritized students, supporting the success of LGBTQIA+ students, and for infusing equity into our award-winning undergraduate research program. Bridgewater State University is also the convener and lead institution of the Racial Equity and Justice Institute dedicated to identifying and implementing data-informed strategies intended to eliminate racial educational equity gaps. Bridgewater State University is also deeply engaged in a campus-wide implementation of comprehensive recommendations offered by a presidentially charged Racial Justice Task Force.

Bridgewater State University Division of Human Resources & Talent Management is conducting a search for an Executive Director. Reporting to the vice president, this position will serve as an equity-minded human resources leader helping to effectuate change at BSU and collaborate across the institution to create programs and initiatives that support the strategic direction of the HRTM division and the university, while ensuring these initiatives are accomplished with an equity practice framework.

Position Type: Professional Non-Unit

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and recommend strategic and creative equity-minded human resources and talent management initiatives designed to improve the employment experience by positively impacting and supporting a diverse employee population.
  • Participate in the divisional strategic planning process and the development of annual HRTM goals, with an emphasis on equity-mindedness in human resources and talent management practices.
  • Establish diversity, inclusion and equity strategies that attract and retain a diverse and talented workforce at all levels at the university – develop a diverse and equitable branding strategy; foster relationships with external partners to build a diverse talent pipeline.
  • Advise the vice president on emerging and best practices key to advancing the university’s strategic priorities focused on employee and student success.
  • Ensure a consistent and inclusive approach in the delivery of HR services and the administration of HR policies and procedures for all.
  • Counsel and advise managers and employees on matters pertaining to employee and labor relations; policies and procedures; and performance management using an equity-minded lens.
  • Identify employee relations trends that impede organizational progress and recommend inclusive interventions.
  • Administer staff collective bargaining agreements and attend labor/management meetings with the vice president; participate in the grievance hearing process.
  • Responsible for oversight of special projects that may require immediate turnaround with minimal assistance; conduct research and recommend actions.
  • Lead, motivate, guide, and develop staff members; ensure staff is fully engaged in achieving the strategic intentions of the division.
  • Serve on university committees as assigned by the vice president.
  • Related work and projects as assigned.

Some of the core responsibilities of this position can be performed remotely and a hybrid telework model can be considered for the position as approved by the vice president.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience suitable to fulfill position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated progressively responsible experience as an equity-minded HR practitioner with a broad knowledge of human resources and talent management practices and principles.
  • Leadership experience; managing staff both directly and indirectly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diversity of people, thought and perspective, and practices.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds present in our community.
  • Experience developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and external partners.
  • Ability to work in an environment demanding exceptional levels of confidentiality.
  • Capable of influencing others outside direct supervisory lines.
  • Project management leadership resulting in progress of initiative.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge of national, regional, and local labor market trends.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of federal immigration laws.
  • Proficient in Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) technologies.
  • Linguistic proficiency in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, and/or French.
  • Formal training or certification in diversity, equity, and inclusion concepts.
  • Certification from the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) and/or Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM)
    • HRCI Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
    • HRCI Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)
    • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)
    • SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)
