Detailed Job Description
As part of a growing, strategic research focus in artificial intelligence, data science, and data analytics, the School of Information at RIT invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position, at the assistant professor rank, for an appointment beginning fall 2022.

We are seeking a candidate with expertise in the general area of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. Some example subareas include (but are not limited to): deep learning, statistical learning, computer vision, data mining, knowledge representation, and human-in-the-loop AI. Outstanding applicants in other areas of artificial intelligence, data science, or data analytics will also be considered, especially those with collaboration potential with existing School of Information faculty.

Research Environment: RIT is home to the Center for Human-Aware Artificial Intelligence (http://www.rit.edu/chai), consisting of AI researchers conducting work in machine-learning and perception, human-centered AI, automation, and brain-inspired computing. RIT is an interdisciplinary research hub, with research groups and communities encompassing a range of domain areas, including: RIT's Personalized Healthcare Technology initiative (http://pht.rit.edu), Center for Cybersecurity (http://www.rit.edu/cybersecurity), Center for Advancing STEM Teaching, Learning and Evaluation (https://www.rit.edu/castle/), the Media Arts Games Interaction Creativity (MAGIC) Center (https://magic.rit.edu), and the Center for Accessibility and Inclusion Research (CAIR) (http://cair.rit.edu). For instance, CAIR consists of 30 RIT faculty and students actively engaged in research in the fields of human-computer interaction and accessibility for people with disabilities, including researchers investigating AI-based technologies. RIT is home to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), with over 1,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing students on the campus. In addition, RIT is a member institution of the iSchools Organization (https://ischools.org/).

Applicants should possess a PhD degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Information Science, or a related field by the start date of the appointment, and conduct high-quality, cutting-edge research that shapes the HCI or computing accessibility fields. Applicants should show strong commitment to undergraduate/graduate teaching, demonstrate the ability for innovative research and high-impact publications, and exhibit potential to pursue externally funded research.

The College:
Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at RIT is one of the most comprehensive computing colleges in the nation. The college is housed in modern facilities in Rochester, NY, that include leading programs in computer science, game design and cybersecurity. As home to the country’s first undergraduate programs in software engineering and information technology, as well as the recently opened Global Cybersecurity Institute, Golisano College has long been a leader in computing education and research. The Department:
The School of Information (the iSchool) is one of six administrative units within the College of Computing and Information Sciences; the School creates and applies knowledge in the field of information science, to bring together people, information, and technology. The iSchool oversees academic and curricula development for both undergraduate, and graduate students, pursuing degrees in three undergraduate BS programs, four graduate programs, and an advanced certificate program – including programs in computing and information technologies, human-computer interaction, data science and analytics, and web and mobile computing. The iSchool provides leadership, administrative, financial, and logistical support to more than 700 undergraduate and graduate students with 28 faculty and 7 staff in Rochester, and also provides support of the School's degrees at RIT's global campuses in Croatia, Kosovo, and UAE. The School is among the university leaders in terms of grant generation and publications, and faculty include winners of university awards for teaching and research, as well as professional leaders, including ACM SIG chairs. The School is also home to several labs and research centers, especially in the areas of human-computer interaction, accessibility, and data analytics. The School also plays a large research and delivery role in the university's Computing for All efforts, to foster greater inclusion in computing and information sciences.

Required Minimum Qualifications
All candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of:

  • Completion of a PhD in Computer Science, Informatics, Information Science, or a related field by the start date of the appointment
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research in top venues in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or in fields representing applications of AI-based technologies
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach effectively in higher education
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
