Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Penn State Brandywine invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Director will have the extraordinary opportunity to be an innovative leader and manager of the newly opened Brandywine LaunchBox powered by Penn State, located in the Utility Works Makerspace in Lansdowne. The Director will lead and support Chancellor and campus priorities in Penn State Brandywine's Strategic Plan 2020-2025, New Opportunities, New Stories, especially objectives related to Workforce & Innovation; Local, Regional, & Global Partner; and Academic & Career Success, among others.

Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Director will serve on the Chancellor's senior leadership team; engage the Penn State Brandywine Advisory Board and Penn State Brandywine Alumni Society, and lead and serve on key campus and university committees and task forces. The Director will be prominently present in Brandywine LaunchBox powered by Penn State in residence at the Utility Works Makerspace in Lansdowne and present on the Penn State Brandywine campus in Media. The Director will be visible and present throughout the greater Philadelphia region, especially Delaware and Chester Counties, networking with business and industry, civic and community, and k12 and higher education partners. The Brandywine LaunchBox is a signature program of Invent Penn State, a Commonwealth-wide initiative to spur economic development, job creation, and student career success through the ingenious power of partnerships.

Responsibilities for this position will include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership and Management

  • Provide visionary leadership and overall management for the Brandywine LaunchBox powered by Penn State, located in the Utility Works Maker Space in Lansdowne, and priority initiatives in Penn State Brandywine's Strategic Plan 2020-2025, specifically objectives for Workforce & Innovation; Local, Regional, and Global Partner; and Academic & Career Success
  • Serve as a member of the Chancellor's Council engaged in leadership and policy, finance, culture and media, support services, human capital, and markets to fulfill Brandywines' vision, mission, and values. Service on various University-wide and campus committees, task forces, work groups
  • Collaborate with the Directors (senior leadership) for Development, Strategic Communications, Finance & Business, Information Technology, Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and others to achieve strategic goals and objectives, as well as operational efficacy and efficiency

Strategic Partnerships

  • Cultivate and enhance relationships with business and industry, civic and community, k12 and higher education leaders to advance economic development, job creation, and student career success, including attending events, serving on boards and committees, and other forms of engagement with internal and external stakeholders
  • Facilitate and build networks to support the growth of the Brandywine LaunchBox and achievement of priority initiatives in Penn State Brandywine Strategic Plan 2020-2015, such as the newly formed Brandywine LaunchBox ad hoc advisory committee

Fiscal Planning & Growth

  • Lead and collaborate to achieve a sustainable business model for the Brandywine LaunchBox and potential new innovation spaces, programs, and events
  • Cultivate and develop new funding streams through revenue-generation, philanthropy, and grants in collaboration with the Director of Development and Director of Finance & Business as well as other senior leaders; responsible for integrated budget planning, management, and accountability

Human Resources

  • Develop and support high functioning teams of unit staff, advisory board members, business and civic partners, donors, alumni, student interns, and others to achieve strategic and annual goals and priorities

Programs & Events

  • Utilize research and data to continuously improve and create unique experiences (e.g., workshops, seminars, speaker series, pitch competitions, coaching, mentoring, camps, co-op program, etc.) at the Brandywine LaunchBox in Lansdowne, on the Penn State Brandywine campus in Media, and other sites throughout the region on a range of topics related to creating an innovation economy, entrepreneurial ecosystem, and 21st century careers for a 21st century workforce; target audiences will include the public (youth to adults), entrepreneurs and businesses (start-ups to corporations), undergraduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni; collaborate with senior leaders across campus and strategic partners to launch, implement, and evaluate programs and events
  • Lead and support programs and events to promote inclusive entrepreneurship economic development, with a focus on providing Black and Brown entrepreneurs with the knowledge, tools, and cutting-edge tactics to launch and accelerate sustainable startups

Communications & Marketing

  • Promote and tell success stories from the Brandywine LaunchBox powered by Penn State and portfolio of current and emerging entrepreneurial progarms, events, and activities to the public and on campus in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communications, with prime responsibility for content development for marketing of communications

Typical requirements of this position include a Master's Degree or higher, preferably in Business, Communications, Education, or related field, plus 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Successful supervisory or people experience, including developing employees, consultants, volunteers, and student interns to achieve desired outcomes
  • Successful experience or willingness to learn fundraising and grant development and administration, in collaboration with colleagues and partners
  • Ability to bring innovative and relevant programs and partnerships to life, and to represent initiatives well to donors and other stakeholders, on and off campus, and enjoy working with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to support and participate in advocacy and government relations
  • Ability to use data and predictive analytics for planning and assessment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, to fulfill strategic directions and objectives. This may include early morning, evening, or weekend engagements and events with external stakeholders.
