Milwaukee School of Engineering — Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer (VPF/CFO). MSOE seeks an innovative, experienced, and entrepreneurial leader with a comprehensive understanding of the financial operations of a modern academic institution and who and manage a diverse and highly competent organization while working collaboratively with other campus administrators to support and advance the university.  

Founded by practicing engineer Oscar Werwath in 1903, MSOE was the first American educational institution based on an applications-oriented curriculum. Today MSOE is an independent, non-profit university with over 2,700 full-and part-time students offering 15 bachelor’s and 9 master’s degrees primarily in engineering, computer science, actuarial science, user experience, business, and nursing. The university has a national academic reputation; longstanding ties to business and professional organizations, and a 96% job placement rate in students’ chosen majors. MSOE continues to be at the forefront of applied professional education with emphasis on both theory and technology, coupled with intensive laboratories and career practice.

The CFO reports directly to the MSOE President and is a part of the University’s Leadership Team. The new CFO is responsible for overseeing all financial matters of the university. Reporting to the VPF/CFO are the offices of Finance, Student Accounts, and Financial Aid. MSOE seeks an experienced and accomplished leader with a demonstrated record of innovation and success in financial management who is familiar with the business operations of a non-profit, academic institution. Successful candidates will provide evidence of effective leadership of a diverse range of constituents, the ability to recruit and manage outstanding personnel, excellent communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with other leaders, and a commitment to programmatic excellence. They must be familiar with current accounting and finance tools and principles. The ability to work effectively across boundaries with other university personnel to support and advance the university’s mission is critical. The next VPF/CFO should be a mission driven leader committed to supporting a transformative educational experience for MSOE students. A bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Finance is required for this position, while a master’s degree is preferred.

Specifically, the VPF/CFO will need to:

  • Commit to the mission and expectations of this dynamic and growing institution that is a national leader in STEM education;
  • Effectively manage MSOE’s financial resources;
  • Be fully competent in all aspects of financial literacy, including accounting, financing capital projects and improvements, and investing the institution’s endowment;
  • Manage the broad insurance needs of the institution;
  • Review/ensure application of appropriate internal controls, compliance and procedures;
  • Demonstrate the necessary attributes of a strategic chief business officer and understand how to align budgets and finances with strategic priorities;
  • Develop financial strategies to support capital improvement projects to fulfill institutional long-range planning goals;
  • Work and communicate effectively with the President, other members of the MSOE Leadership Team, and campus leaders;
  • Possess senior management experience in a complex organization, with a preference for higher education experience;
  • Demonstrate active and successful participation in strategic planning efforts;
  • Work effectively with external consultants and partners of the institution;
  • Be an excellent communicator, able to speak and communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies (Regents, students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and members of the local community);
  • Be well versed in human resources policies;
  • Possess a high degree of professional discretion, integrity and good judgment, model exemplary standards of professional conduct, and have the ability to establish credibility throughout the institution;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to approachability, honesty, and trust.
  • Motivate and mentor staff personnel and promote a culture of excellence, collaboration and professional growth;
  • Be willing and able to make difficult, timely, and financially responsible decisions;
  • Be an effective, fair, and open negotiator committed to a transparent decision-making process emphasizing consultation and collaboration with faculty, students, staff, and the local community;
