Miami University — Data Services Librarian / Assistant or Associate Librarian

King Library: Data Services Librarian/Assistant or Associate Librarian to lead the public services role in developing the Libraries’ data services, including data analysis, curation, management, and visualization. The position provides outreach, support, and training for students and researchers across academic units in support of research programs and the university’s quantitative and data literacy curriculum. The position will additionally have responsibility for subject specialist and liaison services to data-intensive academic departments, programs, and campus offices. As part of a team-based approach in the Advise & Instruct department, the librarian provides research assistance and teaching of data, library, and information skills for the university community. The Data Services Librarian/Assistant or Associate Librarian will identify existing and emerging data analysis and management needs on campus; consult with faculty, students, and staff on projects involving data analysis, data visualization, software use, programming needs, and research data management; in cooperation with other instruction librarians, develop and deliver educational support systems for data services, including instruction on data curation, management, analysis, and visualization methods, and related software and programming languages; develop and deliver resources and guidelines for data management practices, tools, and repositories; guide faculty, students, and staff with data analysis software; statistical and qualitative data analysis techniques; and data collection, management, and visualization. Contribute to decision-making on Libraries data platform and software support priorities; conceptualize, develop, deploy, and assess data support services; serve as library subject specialist and liaison to undergraduate, graduate, and research programs in the academic departments of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Information Systems and Analytics, Mathematics, and Statistics, and data-centric campus offices including the Center for Analytics and Data Science; and Office of Research & Innovation; establish and maintain positive relationships and awareness with faculty and students in liaison areas; provide specialized information consultation in assigned subject areas and general reference services, supporting the Libraries’ physical and online public service points; provide engaged library teaching using multiple modes and technologies (in-person, online, and asynchronous) as warranted to support curricula and research in assigned areas; inform and support collection development and management in assigned areas including data sets; provide excellent and collegial customer service; monitor changing needs and trends in areas of responsibility; cooperate with colleagues to support and assist in library services across the university.

Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or equivalent by date of appointment; experience or coursework in quantitative data analysis and use of datasets, or in supporting researchers engaged in quantitative data work; general familiarity with data handling and analysis software, programming languages; and visualization tools; ability to work both independently and in teams, with all levels of staff and diverse library customers; ability to meet the Libraries’ promotion and continuing contract requirements (see http://www.lib.miamioh.edu/about/larps.pdf). Appointment as Associate Librarian requires an established record of service and scholarship as described in these requirements. Position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.

Considerations may be given to applicants with: Prior degree, advanced coursework, or work experience in a quantitative data or statistics-intensive field; strong written and oral communication skills; one year prior experience in data librarianship or other work experience in an academic or special library; one year teaching experience, especially at the college level; experience in data management and analysis, digital scholarship, emerging technologies, or scholarly communications issues; experience with data handling and analysis software tools (such as SPSS, Matlab, JMP); programming languages (such as SQL, Python, and R); and visualization tools (such as Tableau, Google Charts, ArcGIS); analytical skills to aid in use of library information resources, technology problem solving, and decision-making.
