Kingsborough Community College — Assistant Professor, English – ESL

Job ID: 23749
Location: Kingsborough Community College
Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Regular/Temporary: Regular

The English Department at Kingsborough Community College, of the City University of New York, a vibrant educational and scholarly community, seeks a full-time specialist in ESL and Composition and Rhetoric at the Assistant Professor rank.

Founded in 1963 as part of the City University of New York (CUNY), Kingsborough Community College remains firmly committed to its mission of providing both liberal arts and career education, promoting student learning and development, and strengthening and serving its diverse community. Kingsborough serves a population of approximately 14,000 students and consistently ranks among the leading community colleges in the country in associate degrees awarded to minoritized students. Kingsborough has been named one of the leading community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. It has also earned national recognition for its creative and effective use of learning communities, for the large number of degrees it confers, for the high percentage of graduates who continue their studies, and for the innovative programs that draw thousands of non-traditional students to its campus every year. Located on the beach of Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, Kingsborough offers a spacious, tree-filled campus-rare in the CUNY system.

The Assistant Professor will teach ESL (including co-requisites courses), integrated reading-writing courses in the first-year composition sequence (including co-requisite courses), and other electives, as needed. Evidence of ongoing scholarly activity in applied linguistics/TESOL is required, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with others in a large, active department. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in their area(s) of expertise and will share responsibility for committee and department assignments, which might include administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The successful candidate will join a warm, collegial English department that teaches ESL courses, composition, literature, creative writing, and journalism. Currently, English stands as a concentration within the liberal arts degree; however, the English department is in the process of establishing English as a separate major. The department is home to Kingsborough’s A.S. in journalism and, in the very near future, a liberal arts A.A. concentration in creative writing.

Tenure-track professorial positions carry a 24-hour course load per academic year, which can be divided across three terms: Fall, Winter and Spring. To help new faculty pursue their research agendas, they receive 24 course-release hours that are to be used during their first five years of employment.

A Ph.D. in applied linguistics, TESOL, or a closely related field is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, to participate in current scholarship or to demonstrate scholarly achievement, and to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

The preferred candidate should have one or more of the following:

  • higher education experience in working with international/ELL students to support their learning goals;
  • expertise in TESOL scholarship, curriculum development, and administration;
  • expertise in two-year college ESL/English studies (e.g., multilingual, antiracist, and multiliteracies, multimodal pedagogies; developmental education reform; contingent labor; second language assessment; listening and speaking instruction, etc);
  • expertise in professional and technical communication;
  • expertise in digital literacies;
  • experience learning a second language (preferred)

$51,242 – $97,580. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
