Austin Peay State University invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations for the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters (COAL). Austin Peay seeks an experienced and innovative academic leader who will collaboratively advance the goals of the college in concert with the university’s strategic plan and long-term aims. 

Located in Clarksville, Tennessee, Austin Peay is a thriving campus that serves the northern Middle Tennessee region, the state, the nation, and the world abroad. With more than 119,000 alumni and a diverse population of more than 10,000 students, Austin Peay is classified as a Master’s Large institution by the Carnegie Foundation and offers doctoral, graduate, bachelor’s, and associate programs, with many programs offered fully online. Austin Peay has a strong relationship with the United States military and is one of only two universities with its own facility – at Fort Campbell – serving more than 1,500 soldiers, dependents, and civilians each semester.

Clarksville is Tennessee’s fifth-largest city and is located only 45 minutes from Nashville. One of the fastest growing and youngest cities in the country, Clarksville was named the “No 1. Best Place to Live” in 2019 by Money magazine. Nashville is a major metropolitan area of over two million residents which prides itself as the home of country music, in addition to its sprawling entertainment and cultural offerings across music, film, television, and as the home of the Tennessee Titans football, Nashville Predators hockey, and Nashville SC soccer teams. 

The College of Arts and Letters promotes the humanities as a means of connecting to the world and understanding global culture. COAL acknowledges and embraces tradition as well as cutting-edge technologies and innovative opportunities. Expert faculty facilitate creative learning environments and ask students to consider humanistic questions, solve problems, and take risks as they develop tangible, transferable skills. COAL is home to more than thirty major and minor degree programs offering courses in the following departments: Art and Design; Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts; Communication; History and Philosophy; African American Studies; Languages and Literature; Music, Theatre and Dance; and Women’s and Gender Studies. Graduates from the College of Arts & Letters have the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes to lead rich, meaningful, productive lives.

The Dean of COAL serves as the senior academic administrator of the college and reports to Provost Maria Cronley. The Dean is responsible for the effective leadership, administrative oversight, resource allocation and management related to the delivery of programs and the oversight of scholarly activities and service. The Dean works closely with the faculty and staff to deliver and support a student-centered experience that fosters engaged learning, rigorous scholarship, creative thinking, and community collaboration across the various departments at the college, as well with the other colleges at Austin Peay. The Dean will maintain a keen eye on college enrollment and will facilitate program growth and design, as well as ensure the current offerings remain strong and competitive. The Dean will be deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and access and will approach matters through this lens. The Dean will work closely with the university advancement team to build resources for COAL, both through philanthropy as well as grants.
