The Office of the President is the system-wide headquarters of the University, managing its fiscal and business operations, and furthering its public interest, academic, and research missions. It supports campuses and students through system-wide funding and programs; manages the University’s multi-billion-dollar operations and investments; oversees medical centers and national labs; provides centralized labor relations and legal services; and promotes the well-being of its diverse and large workforce through benefits and retirement programs. The Office of the President coordinates activities that allow a complex and unique system to operate efficiently as one university, overseeing and managing programs that serve the entire system, and enabling campuses to capture the savings and efficiencies that come from centralized operations.
The Associate Vice President, Total Rewards (AVPTR) is a new role within the Office of the President, uniting two formerly discrete functions (Compensation Programs and Strategy, and Benefits Programs and Strategy), and reporting to the VP of Systemwide Human Resources. The AVPTR will be responsible for broad-based compensation strategy, executive compensation, the delivery of self-insured and insured health and welfare benefits, retirement plans, and wellness programs for some 200 executives and 140,000 staff employees (policy-covered and union-represented) systemwide. This is an opportunity to develop and align a progressive, systemwide Total Rewards strategic framework that strengthens the University’s position in higher education by supporting a diverse and dynamic employee population.

With a relevant degree or equivalent experience, along with a CCP and/or CBP designation and potentially SPHR or SHRM certification, the AVPTR will have at least 15 years of Total Rewards and Executive Compensation and/or benefits design experience. The AVPTR will have a record of advancing leading-edge, cost-effective, market-driven, and action-oriented programs and policies that support organizational growth, culture, and development. Strategic and insightful, the AVPTR will provide advice and guidance to senior leadership across the UC community, and will work collaboratively with diverse constituents including the President, Chancellors, the Faculty Senate, UCOP Executive Leadership, and the Board of Regents.

With a record of thought leadership and operational success in a complex, multi-site environment, the AVPTR will be someone who identifies objectives through consultation, and has the capacity to manage significant human and financial resources. Critical to success will be integrating, developing, and leading a service-oriented team. An able and diplomatic communicator, the AVP will provide data analysis, governance, oversight, and preparation of materials for the President and Board of Regents, and will interact with senior leadership systemwide with regard to compensation and benefits for UC’s various employee populations.

The AVPTR’s work will materially affect the lives of the UC workforce and the reputation of the UC workplace.
