Portland State University — Coordinator of Black Student Services/Multicultural Advisor

The role of this position is to develop and lead programs that enhance student success and graduation of African American students at Portland State University. A primary focus of this position is on increasing the retention, persistence and successful graduation of African American and other first generation, under-represented students through comprehensive support services (i.e. academic advising, advocacy, assistance with the financial aid process and scholarships, general guidance and community building, etc.).

The Coordinator case-manages a cohort of students who participate in a first year retention program that includes peer mentoring, holistic advising, and a college success course. Additionally, this position will develop academic workshops and co-curricular programming designed to support student success and build a strong sense of community for under-represented students. The Coordinator serves as a liaison, advocate and educator on the unique needs, experiences, and challenges faced by African American college students.

The professional in this position works collaboratively with the department and other campus units and external organizations to provide services and activities that are sensitive to cultural differences and that promote access and student success. Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, student affairs/higher education leadership, adult learning, or relevant discipline plus three years of related full time experience. A Bachelor's degree and equivalent of five or more years of related full time experience (in all categories defined by the position summary) may be substituted for the Master's degree plus three years of related full time experience.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and diverse cultures.
  • Experience giving presentations to diverse students and families.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Deep understanding and awareness of the experiences and needs of African American students.
  • Knowledge of African American retention strategies and best practices in higher education.
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of creativity and innovation in developing strategies to improve student academic success, retention and graduation.
  • Cross-cultural communication skills.
