The Ohio State University — Assistant Professor of Plant Bioengineering and Synthetic Biology

We seek to recruit and support the development of a scientist who will lead a vibrant research and teaching program in the area of plant metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. The successful candidate will advise/mentor graduate students and develop an externally funded research program focused on developing and utilizing genetic tools to understand and improve traits in plants. Research should use plant synthetic biology with direct applications for improving plants to benefit human health. Outputs of the work should benefit growers, consumers, and/or the food industry. This position will foster interdisciplinary efforts from fundamental molecular biology to method or cultivar development. As a Foods for Health Discovery Theme hire (, the successful applicant will engage in collaborative interactions across the Department, College, and University.

It is expected that a successful candidate will:

  • Develop an extramurally funded independent research program in plant synthetic biology and advise and mentor graduate students
  • Demonstrate impact through production of peer-reviewed publications, intellectual property development, and/or technology licensing
  • Teach 1-2 course per year, related to area of expertise, work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students within the Department and the Foods for Health Discovery Theme
  • Cultivate an equitable learning environment that is committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion within plant biotechnology and related professions, and
  • Serve the Department, College, Discovery Theme, University, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate responsibilities and activities.

Required Qualifications

  • A relevant Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience.
  • Evidence of scholarly ability and productivity.
  • Demonstrated experience and potential for excellence in guiding research in plant biotechnology.
  • Evidence of ability or potential to support research through extramural funding.
  • Evidence of ability or potential to work collaboratively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with diverse individuals.
  • Evidence of ability or interest to teach, recruit, and advise students.
