Department Summary

Beyond being a repository of materials, libraries play a critical role in enhancing the teaching and learning experience at CSUSB. The University supports two libraries: the John M. Pfau Library on the main campus and a smaller library on the Palm Desert Campus, the Helene A. Hixon Information Resource Center.

John M. Pfau Library

The Pfau Library is centrally located on the San Bernardino campus in a 145,000 square foot, six story building (five stories plus a basement). The library collection of over one million physical and digital/electronic items is supplemented by the CSU+ and ILLiad interlibrary loan service and OneSearch, making student and faculty access to books and other library materials from throughout the CSU System almost unlimited. Constructed in 1971, the Library is named after John M. Pfau, who served as the founding president of CSUSB from 1962 to 1982.

Helene A. Hixon Information Resource Center

A smaller library (approximately 3,000 volumes) on the Palm Desert campus serves students by providing a limited collection more focused on the programs delivered on this campus. It also provides access to computing technology and printing. Students and faculty have access to collections at the San Bernardino campus and at all campus libraries throughout the CSU System via OneSearch, made possible by the Unified Library Management System, as well as Interlibrary loan services. Library instruction, reference, and assistance is offered by the PDC Librarian, a staff member, and a small group of student assistants. The PDC library also houses a valuable water resources archive related to the Salton Sea. The Dean coordinates regularly with the Palm Desert Campus Dean to ensure resources are available and relevant.

Both libraries provides access to a breadth of knowledge, information services, and venues to enrich scholarship and people's lives, while supporting life-long information literacy, critical thinking, and societal engagement.
Job Summary
The Dean of University Libraries serves as the chief fiscal ($4 million budget) and administrative officer for both libraries.

The next Dean will find an engaged faculty, who are passionate about helping students become life-long learners and full participants in university life and supporting their faculty colleagues in ensuring relevant and innovative teaching tools and research resources. There are 11 tenure- track faculty, 23 staff, and 35 student assistants whose commitment to excellence is evident and valued.

Primary responsibilities for the Dean include the following:

  • Manage all college library resources (fiscal, personnel, facilities, technological, and information resources) necessary to provide high-quality library services.
  • Lead library faculty and staff members in a team-oriented environment, providing thoughtful mentoring, professional development, and advocacy.
  • Administer all library services and their archives, assuring sound operations.
  • Serve as a member of the Dean's Council, the Provost's Leadership Team, and the CSU Council of Library Deans (COLD).

LEADERSHIP AGENDA

The Dean's leadership agenda focuses on developing innovative approaches in delivering library services, increasing resources, and engaging campus and community stakeholders. All of these leadership opportunities intertwine with each other and must be informed by careful analysis of data, pursued in a transparent manner, and inclusive of faculty, staff, and student voices.

Developing Innovative Approaches

The Library's most recent strategic plan has largely been accomplished, and the new Dean of Libraries will begin working with the Library team and other stakeholders to articulate a new plan. Central to this plan are the following areas: sustaining vibrant research and learning in a research-practioner environment, ensuring that the space and services respond to contemporary student, faculty and community needs in an evolving environment, addressing facility master-planning for expansion on the main campus and at PDC, and forecasting budgetary support for the delivery of quality and sustainable library services. In all these activities, the Dean will apply a student-centered perspective.

Increasing Resources

Related to the aforementioned strategic planning efforts, the new Dean will be a key partner in identifying and delivering resources. This may include leveraging resources through careful budget management. Creating a compelling narrative for support, the Dean will cultivate external relationships and work with colleagues to engage in fundraising opportunities through grants, gifts, partnerships, and contracts. The University is launching a major capital campaign in Fall 2022, and the Library is one of several identified fundraising goals. The Dean will engage in these activities with the assistance of campus partners and bring an openness to learning about fundraising and effective advocacy on the importance of the libraries to the faculty, student, and community experience.

Engaging Campus and Community Stakeholders

Engaging with campus and community stakeholders is critical in elevating the Library's involvement in all areas of the academy, which enriches the university experience. The Dean will promote collaborative projects with academic departments and other campus and community stakeholders to encourage active learning, critical information literacy, and civic engagement. This includes, for example, supporting innovative and engaging programs, guest speakers, workshops, lecture series, and exhibits.

Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, 'Exempt' position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen to diverse stakeholders and cultivate an organizational climate based upon respect, kindness, open communication, and teamwork.
  • Evidence of engagement with a diverse student population, many of whom are first-generation and/or come from underrepresented groups; commitment to enhancing the cultural competency and diversity of faculty and staff.
  • Understanding of transformational practices that allow a university library to address contemporary student, faculty, and community needs.
  • Evidence of collaborative efforts that engage a variety of stakeholders.
  • Commitment to shared governance in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Familiarity with budget and management operations, including strategic planning and assessment.
  • The ability to use evidence (data, research, etc.) to inform decision-making.
  • The ability to create a compelling narrative for the importance of the libraries in higher education and the community.
  • An innovative and results-oriented approach.
Education and Experience

  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Progressively responsible leadership experience in academic library administration at an ALA-accredited institution of higher education.
Preferred Requirements

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
  • Organizational management experience (budget, strategic planning, personnel, facilities) in an institution similar to CSUSB, including work with collective bargaining units.
  • Demonstrated success in creating innovative venues and spaces to enhance student learning and community partnership.
  • Successful record of community engagement, fundraising, and grants with donors, foundations, government, and community organizations.
  • Experience with library archives.
  • Experience with library consortiums.
  • Experience leading organizational change in a dynamic environment.
Salary

Classification Hiring Range: $9,167 – $27,500 per month
