Morgan State University’s Wayne Dawkins Honored by the News Leader Association

Wayne Dawkins, professor of professional practice in the School of Global Journalism & Communication at Morgan State University, is the 2021 recipient of the Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship, awarded by the News Leaders Association. The award, given in recognition of an educator’s outstanding efforts to encourage students of color in the field of journalism, will be presented at the News Leaders Awards Ceremony during its annual leadership conference, being held in May.

Dawkins has had a long career in journalism working on the staff as several newspapers including the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the Post-Tribune of Gary, Indiana, and the Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia. Before joining the faculty at Morgan State University, he was a professor at the Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications in Virginia.

Dawkins is the author of City Son: Andrew W. Cooper’s Impact on Modern-Day Brooklyn (University Press of Mississippi, 2012) and Rugged Waters: Black Journalists Swim the Mainstream (August Press, 2003).

Professor Dawkins is a graduate of Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York. He holds a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.
