Department and College/School Information
The accredited Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) and the Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy (UPPP) are two of the four graduate degrees including the Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy and the Master of Public Administration offered by the Department of Public Affairs and Planning in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA). With a broadly trained multidisciplinary faculty, the college also offers a Master of Landscape Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Master of Science in Sustainable Building Technology and bachelor’s degrees in architecture, interior design, and sustainable urban design. The college’s six research centers including the state-funded Institute of Urban Studies, the David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture, Arlington Urban Design Center, the Digital Architecture Research Consortium, and the Center for Metropolitan Density carry out research and professional projects throughout the metropolitan region, the state, and beyond. Additionally, Planning faculty lead the federally funded Center for Transportation, Equity, Decisions and Dollars (CTEDD). Job Summary
The Department of Public Affairs and Planning (PAPL) in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Urban Planning to begin Fall 2022.

We seek to recruit a candidate that represents the diverse populations that UTA serves and who has a research focus in one or more of the following areas: urban design & sustainable development, smart & resilient cities, economic development, and environmental planning. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated research agenda that will contribute to the furtherance of UTA’s Strategic Plan, specifically to its Sustainable Urban Communities theme (

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The candidate should be able to teach courses in one or more of the following: urban design, sustainable land use, geographic information systems, metropolitan sustainability, environmental planning and policy, and/or housing policy, as well as graphics and multimedia communication. Teaching may be at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. The candidate is expected to contribute to multiple emphasis areas and to our certificate programs and supervise theses and dissertations in the planning programs and to serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

Required qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in planning or a closely related field by May 2022. 

Successful applicants to the Associate Professor position must demonstrate a strong research record through publishing and grantsmanship and excellence in teaching; to the Assistant Professor position, excellence in teaching and demonstrated potential to establish a strong research and publishing agenda. Candidates should have a strong commitment to transdisciplinary approaches to challenging urban issues and to advancing our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Preferred qualifications
Research or teaching interests related to social justice and issues of intersectionality in planning would be a strong asset.  We are also open to candidates with a domestic and/or international planning research agenda.

AICP certification and experience in professional planning and community outreach and service are also welcomed qualifications. As the Planning program is in a department with Public Affairs and shares many courses and dissertation committees, experience and interest in public administration and public policy are desirable but not required.
