THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting directly to President Joseph G. Marina, S.J. and serving on the cabinet, the collaborative and forward-thinking Vice President of Enrollment Management has overall responsibility for the University’s enrollment function. As the institution’s chief enrollment officer, the Vice President will provide direct supervision and leadership support to the Associate Vice President for Admissions and Enrollment and the Associate Vice President for Financial Aid and Enrollment and manage a division of over 30 individuals.

The Vice President of Enrollment Management will contribute to a well-established division and strong foundation by providing strategic and innovative leadership, in alignment with the University’s mission and strategic priorities, for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral admissions, as well as financial aid, and serving as a resource for academic program planning and participates in the University’s strategic financial and enrollment planning processes. The Vice President has the opportunity to further the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, a core principle of the Strategic Plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES and PRIORITIES

The expectations for the Vice President of Enrollment Management require that the successful candidate possess the ability and experience to accomplish the following responsibilities and priorities in these key areas:

University Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet and work closely with the other Cabinet members, especially in the areas of finances, planning and development.
  • Participate in and support the University’s strategic enrollment process as a member of the Strategic Enrollment Council and as Chair of the Strategic Enrollment Tracking team.
  • Serve as liaison (co-liaison) for the Board of Trustees Enrollment Management and External Affairs Committee.
  • Contribute to the University’s retention and graduation efforts in collaboration with the Assistant Provost and Registrar.
  • Participate on various University committees including, but not limited to the University Planning Committee and the Admissions, Retention and Financial Aid committee.

Strategic Enrollment Management

  • Ensure that the strategies, goals and outcomes of the Enrollment Management division are in alignment with the University’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Develop strategies for stable enrollment in anticipation of and in response to enrollment and demographic trends.
  • Implement Admissions and Financial Aid processes and outcomes for both returning and new students; ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Provide transformative strategic leadership for financial aid of new and continuing students and undergraduate, graduate and doctoral admissions teams.
  • Reflect the changing regional and national population demographics as well as the demographics of the Catholic church by leaning into the recruitment and enrollment of a student body that is racially and ethnically diverse.
  • Serve as a resource for academic deans and departments in program assessment and development; research market demand and collaborate with academic partners to propose new academic program considerations to leverage the University’s offerings to attract and enroll qualified students.
  • Participate in the University’s multi-year financial planning and budget process with special emphasis on financial aid leveraging, tuition discounting, and pricing; promote the importance of financial literacy.
  • Develop and oversee the Enrollment Management divisional annual operating budget.
  • Work collaboratively with the executive team and key stakeholders in identifying and implementing key enrollment initiatives.
  • Ensure strong working relationships between Admissions and Financial Aid with key University constituencies by facilitating transparent communication and conflict resolution.

Oversee initiatives to enhance diversity among incoming students through pathway programs andarticulationagreements.

Partnership, Collaboration and Communication

  • Develop strong, collaborative relationships with members of the campus and surrounding community; serve as a liaison between the internal and external communities to establish partnerships and pathways.
  • Foster and support a positive and cohesive work environment; mentor and supervise a competent, diverse, and experienced staff that works together to provide excellent customer service and to promote the academic, social, and spiritual benefits of attending the University of Scranton.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications to develop relevant marketing strategies and materials, including maximizing the university website and other social media tools.
  • Partner with a unionized faculty, as well as alumni, athletics, student affairs and other university offices, equipping the community to develop, leverage and maximize ways to recruit students who will become distinctive graduates at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Represent the University at conferences, seminars, industry events, and more with local, state, and national organizations.

Operations, Data and Technology

  • Provide transparent and useful analysis of enrollment data and trends through the development and presentation of reports to the President’s Cabinet, Board of Trustees and University committees as needed.
  • Exhibit strong technical skills and a demonstrated understanding of and ability to use the latest technology in recruitment and enrollment planning (demonstrated expertise with Banner and Technolutions Slate CRM preferred).
  • Share expert knowledge in the use and analysis of enrollment data, offering information and reports regularly, transparently and appropriately with campus partners.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

The Vice President of Enrollment Management must have earned a Bachelor’s degree, with a master’s or advanced degree strongly preferred. Additionally, they will have a minimum of ten years of progressive responsible leadership and management experience in higher education, with emphasis on admissions, financial aid, and enrollment management initiatives. In addition, the successful candidate will possess most, if not all, of the following:

  • A clear understanding of and commitment to the values and goals of Catholic and Jesuit higher education; ability to respect, support and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission.
  • Demonstrated success in promoting and sustaining diversity projects; creation of initiatives toenhance diversity among incoming students by expanding community outreach, pathwayprogramsandarticulation agreements.
  • Excellent written communication, verbal communication, and presentation skills; outstanding listener with strong relational skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Demonstrated talent management approach in staffing to mature the abilities and expertise of staff so that they may assume expanded responsibilities and roles; proven ability to recruit and retain well-qualified, high performing professionals and empower them to succeed.
  • Evidence of decisive management skills exemplified by a record of excellence in delegation, responsibility and accountability.
  • Substantive knowledge of the higher education landscape, trends and shifting demographics.
  • Proven track record of successfully identifying, planning, leading, implementing, and managing enrollment management strategies and initiatives.
  • Ability to research, interpret and employ data in a sophisticated way while anticipating new trends and adapting proactively to the changing landscape within the enrollment management field.
  • Deep and authentic appreciation for the mission and vision of the University and the uniqueness of the surrounding region; willingness to invest in a community that works towards a common purpose.
  • Ability to differentiate strategies for graduate recruitment and enrollment in varying programs and disciplines.
  • Understanding the value of disaggregating undergraduate recruitment efforts to maximize and adapt efforts that are responsive to students’ and their families’ needs.
  • Possession of a forward-thinking approach, as well as the important personal attributes of ethics and integrity.

 

 

THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON

In 1888, The University of Scranton was founded as Saint Thomas College by the Most Reverend William G. O’Hara, D.D., the first Bishop of Scranton. The College was staffed by diocesan priests and seminarians until 1896 and then, for one year, by the Xaverian Brothers. From 1897 until 1942 the institution, which was renamed The University of Scranton in 1938, was administered for the Diocese by the Christian Brothers. In 1942, the Jesuits were invited to administer the University. The University has flourished under the Jesuits, growing from what was primarily a commuter college with fewer than 1,000 students to a broadly regional, comprehensive university with a total enrollment of approximately 5,300 students. During the institution’s 125th anniversary year, in 2013-2014, the University community celebrated its proud past and promising future with a yearlong series of events and activities.

In recent years, the University has invested more than $295 million in campus improvements, either completed or under way. In 2011, Pilarz and Montrone Halls, which house nearly 400 upper class students and a fitness center, opened. The new Loyola Science Center was completed in two phases in 2011 and 2012. Edward R. Leahy Jr. Hall, which houses the departments of physical therapy, occupational therapy and exercise science, was dedicated in September 2015. The Rev. Kevin P. Quinn,

S.J Athletics Campus, the new $14 million, 11-acre home for the University’s soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball and softball Division III NCAA teams, was dedicated in May 2018. The Gail and Francis Slattery Center for Ignatian Humanities was established in 2019; it serves as a national model for humanities in action to advance the University’s liberal arts tradition and enhance the core role it plays in the formation of students to become “men and women for others.” Finally, The University of Scranton announced plans to establish a Center for Ethics and Excellence in Public Service, with a full launch planned during the fall semester of 2021. Housed in the University’s Political Science Department of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Center will work to foster the development of ethical and competent public officials and civically knowledgeable, responsible, and engaged community members.

Governance

The Board of Trustees at the University of Scranton serves an institution that is founded in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition, committed to scholarship, community and service. The Board also sets overall directions and institutional objectives for the University.

On June 14, 2021, Joseph G. Marina, S.J., became the 29th president of The University of Scranton. Father Marina has more than 20 years of service as a teacher, pastor, scholar and school administrator – experiences that have shaped his steadfast belief in the transformative qualities of a Catholic and Jesuit education. Under his leadership, the President’s Cabinet provides advice and counsel to the president in developing, implementing and communicating policy for the university. LOCATION

The University of Scranton is a vital part of a city that is considered the geographic and cultural center of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
