Job Description:
SUNY Empire State College’s Office of Opportunity Programs seeks a full-time Empire Promise Program Assistant Director (State Title: Senior Staff Assistant) with the expectation to provide some leadership and proactive support and advisement for undergraduate students that are a part of the program.

The Assistant Director of the Empire Promise Program (EPP) will participate in recruitment activities, provide academic advisement, as well as to assist in managing a range of student success items, such as program orientation, academic coaching, retention initiatives, enrichment programming, and student engagement programming.

This position will supervise the EPP Advisor and is a part of the Opportunity Programs leadership team, including responsibilities related to data analysis and trend identification.

The selected incumbent must be an experienced higher education professional that has worked with diverse student populations, especially non-traditional students.  The incumbent must also be knowledgeable about academic advisement, student services, and programming at the college level, as well as familiarity with working with adult students, specifically those from diverse backgrounds, underrepresented populations, and that are non-traditional learners, in both face-to-face and online learning environments. This position requires dedication to developing innovative ways to reach and engage students, effect student persistence, and provide holistic student development and support.

Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Supervise the Empire Promise Program Advisor and serve as a member of the Opportunity Program Leadership Team.
  • Obtain student academic data, related to retention/persistence, course completion, graduation probability, first term factors, and student engagement.  Analyze the data, present it to the leadership team, and make suggestions for ways to improve service, programming, and performance.

Advisement and Coaching

  • Serve as Empire Promise students’ primary mentor (academic advisor), provide coaching for escalated student situations, student support to stay informed of all student’s academic progress.
  • Deliver/instruct degree planning to OP students. Liaise with Academic Review to amend degree plans, as needed.

Student Services

  • Act as a point person throughout the student lifecycle for referral to/collaboration with campus resources, offices, and services.  Check student academic progress and follow up with students. Investigate escalations and informal student complaints, grievances, and appeals.  Collect information and report it to the associate director or director when the case needs to be escalated.

Programming

  • Deliver information session on EPP during the recruitment and onboarding period.  Respond to EPP prospects during the recruitment cycles.
  • Coordinate clubs for EPP/OP students.
  • Play an active role in planning, delivering, and facilitating the EPP Orientation during the summer. Assist students with the transition to the JumpStart Program during EPP enrollment terms.
  • Assist in the delivery of OP/EPP programming throughout the academic year.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in higher educational settings.
  • Experience in working with opportunity and/or access programs, diverse populations, or disadvantaged students.
  • Experience using data analysis to inform decision-making is required.
  • A minimum of three years of academic advisement and/or counseling experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree with course work in higher education, counseling, or related field.
  • Leadership experience or experience in a supervisory role.

  • This position can be located at any one of our regional locations.

Rank/Salary: SL3/$68,000.
