Overview

Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) seeks a Senior Associate Dean for Academic Administration. Serving as an integral member of the SPIA Dean’s leadership team (the “cabinet”) and reporting to the executive vice dean, the senior associate dean for academic administration has principal responsibility for all aspects of SPIA’s undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including curriculum management, scheduling, student advising and related services, graduate admissions, and graduate career development and alumni services. The senior associate dean advises the executive vice dean and dean on a wide range of academic issues and matters and is charged with ensuring coherence across the school’s entire academic offerings in support of our strategic initiatives in DEI, internationalization, public engagement, and the data sciences as other school-wide activities such as Wintersession programming. The senior associate dean serves as departmental representative to university committees on the College and Graduate School; is a voting member of the program’s Faculty Committees on Curriculum, Advising and Prizes; and works closely with the faculty chairs of each of the School’s academic degree programs (AB, MPA, MPP, PhD). The senior associate dean supervises four direct reports and a total staff of approximately 19 and is responsible for a highly complex academic budget underwritten by a range of endowments, term gifts, and institutional funding.

Responsibilities:

Overall Function. The senior associate dean for academic administration has principal responsibility for all aspects of SPIA’s undergraduate and graduate academic programs and other special programs like Junior Summer Institute (JSI) and Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiative (SINSI); manages curriculum, consults with individual faculty and faculty committees, advises students; coordinates activities, programming, visiting lecturers, teaching assignments, and course scheduling between graduate and undergraduate program offices; serves as point of contact with affiliated departmental representatives for coordination of teaching and committee assignments; advises and assists the executive vice dean with annual faculty assignments; coordinates with HR Director on points assignments; works closely with the school’s public affairs and communications office on a wide range of publications, social media initiatives, speakers and events; works closely with the Office of International Programs, the Office of the Dean of the College, the residential colleges, the Graduate School, and other central university services on a range of curricular and student matters. Participates in regular, periodic reviews of the undergraduate (AB) and graduate degree programs (MPA, MPP and PhD), JSI and SINSI. The senior associate dean assumes other special projects and directs special initiatives as needed.

Team Leadership. The senior associate dean develops, motivates, and manages a team of administrative personnel organized across four functional areas (undergraduate program office, graduate admissions department, graduate program office, graduate career development and alumni relations office); builds and sustains a departmental culture of teamwork, collaboration, constituent-focus, and operational excellence; directs regular staff meetings and ensures open, transparent communication among all directors, managers and staff; engages in one-on-one meetings with direct reports; conducts performance appraisals; provides support to optimize use of talent and promote professional development and growth; provides campus leadership as needed in support of related institutional academic and teaching priorities.

Undergraduate Education. The senior associate dean works closely with the associate dean of the undergraduate program office on curriculum management (approximately 60 courses and seminars per year, and six overseas programs), student advising (including course advising, senior thesis advising, academic difficulty, etc.), faculty consultation (including ladder faculty and lecturers), and office supervision and budget management (including course and student information systems, University-provided FTE teaching budget, and a wide range of other endowment and university funding sources).

Graduate Admissions. The senior associate dean oversees the School’s graduate admissions department; consults regularly with the director of graduate admissions regarding effective strategies for outreach (including to underrepresented minorities), fellowship policies, and related matters; participates in graduate admissions meetings with Graduate School; represents SPIA to prospective students on campus or at other venues, as needed; serves on one or more graduate admissions committees (MPA, MPP, PhD).

Graduate Program. The senior associate dean oversees the School’s graduate program office and works closely with the associate dean to develop curriculum, support faculty chairs of degree programs, identify and communicate with visiting lecturers for policy workshops and electives, and provide orientation for advisors and coordinators; ensures robust academic and non-academic student services; meets with the Graduate School on student matters as needed; oversight of summer programming for incoming MPA, MPP, and PhD students; and oversight of Junior Summer Institute (JSI).

Graduate Career Development and Alumni Relations. The senior associate dean oversees the graduate career development and alumni relations office, supports the coordination of internship programs, assesses student-facing policies, interacts with alumni, and ensures that alumni are actively engaged in the School’s career development activities.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

The senior associate dean must have a doctoral degree and 10+ years of directly related experience in a higher education environment; a proven constituent-service orientation and interest in problem solving; a demonstrated ability to manage staff, facilitate teamwork, and address personnel matters in a complex organization; exceptional written and oral communication skills; capacity to set and achieve goals and assess impacts/outcomes; demonstrated time management skills; an awareness of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and demonstrated ability to implement related measures in day-to-day work; an ability to develop and manage productive and effective relationships with a wide range of constituents and stakeholders; demonstrated academic budgeting skills; a clear commitment to continuous improvement of service delivery; the capacity to distill highly technical matters and represent them clearly and succinctly to a broad audience. The senior associate dean must exercise a high level of tact, discretion and diplomacy, and have exceptional judgment and integrity while working collegially with faculty, students, and staff. Strong student advising experience is critical. An ability to establish, develop and manage innovative academic programs is key.

Preferred Qualifications:

A strong preference for past service at an academic institution focused on public policy and international relations. Previous experience as an instructor, lecturer, or professor teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Familiarity with financial aid budgeting. Experience in a student life capacity and/or with directly counseling students.
