Massachusetts Institute of Technology — Senior DEV / OPS Engineer

MIT Open Learning seeks a senior Dev/Ops engineer to ensure that learners across the globe are able to reliably access educational opportunities that will improve their lives and communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Deploy and maintain the infrastructure powering MIT OpenCourseWare
  • Deploy, maintain, and host MITx, MIT’s instance of Open edX
  • Collaborate on improving the Open edX platform
  • Provide developer support (full stack) for Open Learning engineering team to enhance the open source edX platform and develop other scalable applications with flexible APIs
  • Consult with and operationally support MOOC course teams developing course-specific software
  • Providing application support, release engineering, and systems administration
  • Using modern infrastructure tools/platforms (e.g. Pulumi, Consul, Vault) to automate AWS cloud environments

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Seven years’ relevant experience
  • Familiarity with network design and troubleshooting (DNS, TCP/UDP, IP routing)
  • Solid knowledge of UNIX/Linux, especially in virtualized environments (e.g., AWS, OpenStack, Heroku)
  • Experience with systems configuration management and provisioning tools (e.g., Ansible, SaltStack, Chef, Puppet)
  • Operational experience with relational and document databases
  • Familiarity with source code control systems (e.g., Git, Mercurial)
  • Experience with monitoring and logging systems using tools like Datadog or New Relic and ELK or Splunk
  • Experience supporting developers and development environments
  • Ability to work with technical and non-engineering personnel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Python and Django experience
  • Experience configuring web server software, including Nginx, RabbitMQ, Gunicorn, and Elasticsearch
  • Experience with continuous integration and testing via tools (e.g., Concourse and GitHub Actions) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker)
  • Interest in designing and adapting software to be twelve factor applications and in test engineering for Python or JavaScript
  • Knowledge of infrastructure and application security best practices in a cloud environment
