About the position: Senior Researcher, Ideology and Racism

The Senior Researcher will conduct and lead research across issues (including health equity, economic justice, children and families) while helping the FrameWorks’ Research team develop our theory of ideology and refine our approach to analyzing the ideological apparatus of racism as part of American culture.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a mid-career professional with experience in social science research, expertise on ideology and racism, and a commitment to social justice and progressive change. The ideal candidate will have experience working with partners and successfully building and managing those relationships; be intellectually curious, innovative, adaptable, and insightful; be knowledgeable about contemporary social movements and policy issues; and be committed to principles of inclusion and equity.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. The position can require up to 20% travel under standard circumstances. (Due to COVID-19, all research is being conducted virtually until at least spring 2022.)

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop deep knowledge of Strategic Frame Analysis®, FrameWorks’ mixed-methods approach to generating and applying innovative communications strategies.
  • Contribute to the development of FrameWorks’ theory of ideology and the refinement of our analysis of ideology in our work.
  • Contribute to the ongoing refinement of FrameWorks’ analysis of racism and white supremacy as a structuring element of society and culture.
  • Lead FrameWorks’ cultural mindsets research for specific projects, collecting and analyzing data from interviews and surveys to identify the tacit assumptions that shape public thinking
  • Contribute to other research methods, including conducting and analyzing individual interviews, survey experiments, and focus groups to test the frame effects of communications tools, such as values and metaphors.
  • Analyze and interpret research findings to generate applied communications recommendations.
  • Write and present research findings in a variety of formats and styles suitable for different audiences.

Skills needed:

  • Commitment to FrameWorks’ mission, including commitment to equity diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to design, conduct, and analyze applied research to understand how cultural mindsets and ideology operate within a specific issue or domain
  • Deep grounding in theories of ideology (e.g., late Marxist theories [Gramsci, Frankfurt school], structuralist/poststructuralist theories, postmodernist theories) and its intersection with racism and other forms of domination (e.g., Black radicalism, postcolonial theory, intersectional feminism)
  • Ability to integrate qualitative and quantitative findings
  • Outstanding critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to distill and interpret complex research findings for non-academic audiences
  • Strong writing and presentation skills; ability to present to audiences without social science backgrounds
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, partner-oriented setting
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills; ability to thrive in a fast-paced organization and get things done; practical judgment to move work forward; flexibility and ability to adapt to changing needs.

Experience required

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Minimum of 7 years of combined education and professional experience in social science research (relevant disciplines include anthropology, sociology, linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, political science, and communications), with at least 5 of those years above the undergraduate level
  • Deep knowledge of theories and research methods relating to ideology and racism
  • Experience in ethnography, person-centered cognitive interviewing, focus group research, interpretive qualitative research and textual analysis, metaphor analysis, discourse analysis, or media content analysis
  • Experience in applied research settings, non-profit organizations, narrative change/communications, or other related fields (e.g., grassroots activism, market research, journalism)
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity
  • Experience working collaboratively on a diverse team

Salary: $80,000, depending on experience
