Florida Atlantic University — Instructor, Criminology & Criminal Justice

Summary:

The Florida Atlantic University (FAU) School of Criminology and Criminal Justice (SCCJ) invites applications from outstanding candidates for a non-tenure track, full-time position as Instructor. The position begins August 2022 on our Boca Raton campus. We welcome applications from those with experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, and who cultivate a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Areas of instructional focus are open and will depend upon the expertise of the candidate and program needs. Applicants are encouraged to address how their instructional experience aligns with, and could enhance, the SCCJ curriculum.

FAU is a Carnegie doctorate-granting university (RU/high research activity) with over 30,000 students and is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution. In 2021, FAU ranked No. 31 in “The 50 Top Ethnically Diverse Colleges in America” by Best College Reviews. FAU’s strategic plan focuses on healthy aging, neuroscience, environmental science, and sensing and smart systems and is supported by scholarly activities that address diversity, leadership, global perspectives and participation, community engagement, undergraduate research, big data analytics, healthy and sustainable campus environments, and peace, justice, and human rights.

The College of Social Work and Criminal Justice is a partnership between the SCCJ and the Sandler School of Social Work that enables us to reimagine our professions, promote multidisciplinary education and research, address a wider spectrum of societal needs, and champion systemic change through teaching, research, scholarship, and service. We strongly encourage applications from diverse candidates who will enrich the experience of students, the faculty, and the wider university community.

The SCCJ is committed to creating an accessible, supportive working environment and welcomes colleagues who recognize diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence. Our School has a culturally rich educational environment and is the third largest undergraduate degree program by enrollment at FAU. We offer a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Teaching areas are open though we have a particular interest in those who can teach classes about courts and corrections (e.g., adjudication, sentencing, community supervision, jails, prisons, consequences of mass incarceration policies). The SCCJ offers courses face to face, online, and in hybrid/blended formats. The successful candidate must be prepared to teach across these multiple modalities. School initiatives include a decision-making simulation lab, community engaged research, study abroad, high school summer camps, a fully online undergraduate degree program, research colloquia, and research partnerships with the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.

This is a full-time, 12-month position on our Boca Raton campus. Instructors typically teach a 4-4 course load (or equivalent in instructional-related activities) for each Fall and Spring semester and a two course (or equivalent in instructional-related activities) load for the summer. The Instructor will be asked to teach a variety of courses that meet the needs of our School and expand upon the offerings we currently provide.
