Job Description
University Housing is currently seeking an Assistant Director for Residential Life to work as a member of our team and in support of our Residential College model. This position is on the Tempe Campus and manages/supervises the daily administrative operations for one or more of our residential colleges to ensure adherence with established guidelines, policies, standards and requirements, and develops an inclusive, overall community that is academically and socially stimulating. In this position, you will collaborate with partners in one or more residential colleges to develop and advance a collective vision for the student experience and the overall residential college. Our fifteen Residential Colleges within University Housing at ASU provide a diverse array of academic programs. Each Assistant Director oversees an area of approximately 1,000 students, 45+ student staff members, and 4-5 Community Directors.

Essential Duties

  • In collaboration with your academic college(s), develop, implement and assess a yearly strategic plan to advance the student experience within the residential college in regards to culture, wellness, academic and professional success, community engagement and service, affinity to ASU, and sustainability.
  • Implement programs and services in support of the strategic goals and objectives of Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS), the academic college(s), University Housing and the residential college.
  • Supervise staff, including hiring, coaching/developing, evaluating and implementing corrective/disciplinary actions if required.
  • Collaborate with EOSS and academic partners on the delivery of recruitment and retention initiatives that could include Faculty-In-Residence program, Faculty Fellows, First Year Student Connection Surveys, More to Explore, Sun Devil Days, Orientation, Culture@ASU, Well Devils, and Athletic events.
  • Collaborate with academic partners and University Housing staff regarding operational decisions such as community configurations in StarRez, opening and closing procedures and logistics, room inspections and billing, and hiring, evaluation and termination of professional and student staff members.
  • Assist in coordinating and implementing procedures to assure safety and building security for residents.
  • Coordinate and implement response to crisis situations within residential communities in collaboration with the appropriate partners, such as Student Rights & Responsibilities, ASU Counseling, ASU Police, Dean of Students office, and more.
  • Act as Administrator on Duty to ensure proper coordination of services and activities for crisis management.
  • Administer student conduct processes by working with a liaison from Student Rights & Responsibilities to train professional and student staff members, review incident reports, adjudicate high level conduct cases that involve removal from on-campus housing, and assist with Title IX investigations.
  • Administer facilities processes by working with a liaison from facilities to train professional and student staff members, coordinate key processes, identify vacancy and transition processes, create communication plans for facilities situations, create a united partnership with any private partnership.
  • In collaboration with academic partners, manage the residential college budget by creating a vision for the allocation and use of funds by professional and student staff members. Review and authorize expenditures and work with an Administrative Assistant to track required paperwork and complete monthly audits.
  • Work with professional and student staff members to manage a residential tour program for communities of the residential college.
  • Represent University Housing on University and department committees and depending upon circumstances, provide leadership as Advisor to committees.
  • Assess and evaluate programs and services impacting student success and retention.
  • Travel to all four ASU campuses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM plus some evening and weekend hours and on-call duty.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications
Evidence of a Master’s degree in higher education, or related field and at least four years of post-Master’s Degree experience.

Experience in:

  • Housing/residential life management and supervision in a higher education setting, inclusive of supervision of professional staff
  • Residential college living and learning communities and/or first year residential experience programs
  • Working with diverse student populations
  • Administering residential student conduct processes
  • Collaborating and developing/maintaining partnerships with academic colleges and student support services Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Administering and managing a large budget
  • Creating and/or implementing assessment efforts

Demonstrated knowledge of residential life/student affairs practices and principles including:

  • Leadership and supervision
  • Crisis intervention/management
  • Student development theories
  • Student advising methods
  • Student conduct management
