University of Washington Tacoma — Assistant Professor of Epidemiology

The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Epidemiology in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This position primarily supports the interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences B.S. degree, with potential contributions to other majors at the University of Washington Tacoma, including those in the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. Curricular responsibilities include adapting and teaching an existing course in epidemiology and offering community-engaged and research-focused capstone courses. The candidate will also develop upper-division courses in the candidate’s field of expertise. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to create an inclusive classroom and laboratory environment, offer innovative undergraduate learning and research experiences, and mentor biomedical sciences majors interested in pursuing graduate study and careers in public health fields. In addition, the candidate will be expected to actively seek extramural support to develop and maintain a productive, community-engaged research program involving our diverse group of undergraduates. We expect the successful candidate to be an inclusive instructor who incorporates high impact practices in teaching, to mentor and create a sense of belonging for students in the classroom and laboratory. The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was established in 1990 with an interdisciplinary approach to education at its foundation. Our thriving downtown campus serves students with a wide range of ages and backgrounds.   • A curriculum vitae.
  • A statement describing your existing and planned research projects. Please highlight any community partnerships and community-engaged scholarship, and include how you will involve UWT undergraduate students in your research program (four-page maximum).
  • A statement of your teaching philosophy, methods used (or that you intend to use), and high impact teaching practices you have (or will) incorporate. Also include a list of courses you have taught and existing UWT courses you feel qualified to teach (four-page maximum).
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness (two-page maximum)(e.g., quantitative student evaluations, peer or supervisor teaching evaluations, a self-reflection on teaching effectiveness, or other evidence).
  • A summary of your commitment to diversity (two-page maximum) detailing (with examples) the following:
    how your planned research will address health inequalities from the perspectives of marginalized populations;
    your experience with, or plans for, mentoring/advising marginalized undergraduate populations in research;
    teaching practices you have used, or plan to use, to promote inclusion and equity in teaching;
    any evidence of, or plans for, training or professional development related to teaching marginalized student populations in STEM; and
  • any other aspects of your leadership, commitment, and experiences you wish to highlight, and how your experiences and previous work will contribute to the success of students from marginalized groups on our campus.
  • An article-length writing sample (e.g., a journal article for which you are primary author), and,
  • Names and contact information for three professional references, with letters available upon request.
