The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks an accomplished, dynamic, and authentic leader with an excellent record of decisive and innovative leadership, who will advance the School’s commitment to combining research and scholarship with high-quality clinical education to become the next Dean of the School of Nursing (SON). 

The Dean will provide overall strategic vision and leadership and manage the human, financial and capital resources of the School of Nursing. They will work collaboratively with UVA Health and the broader University to advance a comprehensive and ambitious strategy for clinical, educational, and research excellence that moves UVA SON into the top tier nursing schools in the country. 

The Dean will attract and retain world-class faculty, staff and students. They will further expand research in collaboration with other UVA schools, continuing to promote educational programs of the highest caliber, and partnering with the greater Charlottesville Community.

As the School’s chief representative, advocate, and spokesperson, the Dean will articulate the School’s vision and goals to potential students and faculty, alumni, affiliated health service providers, and donors. The Dean will nurture and model an academic community characterized by inclusiveness, transparency, cultural diversity, and respect. They will uphold and advance the School’s deeply held values including a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.


  • Provide visionary leadership and support that enables the SON to achieve and sustain top-ranked national programs and status. 
  • Collaboratively develop, articulate, and implement a strategic plan that will elevate the SON into the elite tier of nursing schools that are committed to excellence in education, research, and clinical care. 
  • Lead the expansion of research productivity and funding within the School, including the exploration of collaborative interdisciplinary research partners to acquire external funding from new sources, increasing infrastructure support for research faculty, and building on and expanding areas of excellence.
  • Lead and cultivate the SON’s diverse and inclusive community of scholars and create innovative models of research, education, and practice. This will include the development of professional knowledge, critical thinking, ethical decision-making, leadership skills, and the independent and interdisciplinary pursuit of high standards of health care. 
  • Embrace innovative and emerging directions in nursing education and strategically position the School to adopt and evaluate new models.
  • Attract, develop, and retain a faculty of distinction; maintain the highest standards in faculty recruitment with a goal of increasing the number of faculty from underrepresented and marginalized groups. 
  • Support a strong leadership team of associate deans, chairpersons, center directors, and executive administration employees committed to achieving the SON’s vision and strategic plan.
  • Actively look for new ways to drive the integration of the SON with UVA Health while serving as an effective advocate; support and guide the development of faculty and partnership opportunities for research teaching and practice. 
  • Work collaboratively with Deans of the 11 other UVA schools in the development of research and education programs. 
  • Promote and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion not only among faculty, staff, and students but also in the process of education, in the conduct of research, and provision of patient care services.
  • Engage with off-campus constituencies, businesses, government agencies, elected officials, and the not-for-profit community to enhance the School’s stature, research productivity, and funding/grant opportunities.
  • Serve as a local and national thought leader in nursing as well as a leader in their own professional area. 
  • Attract diverse financial resources to the School and continue to build unrestricted funds to support research growth, programs, and enrollment. 
  • Develop a strong philanthropic base to support and endow the programs of the SON. Be the public face and voice for the SON in external activities for UVA.
  • Ensure the SON has a strong mentorship and professional development process that fosters faculty and staff professional development and advancement.


UVA is seeking a highly accomplished and entrepreneurial academic leader with a demonstrated ability to elevate the School of Nursing to a top tier school in pursuing its missions of education, research, clinical care, and community engagement. Candidates should bring a demonstrated history of successful leadership and strategic planning in a complex academic healthcare setting. The new Dean will be an institutional leader at the School of Nursing, UVA Health, and the University. It is expected the next Dean will be recognized in the academic nursing community as an innovator and thought leader for nursing education. With strategic goals focused on the tripartite mission and the values of respect and honor, relationships and collaboration, recognition and celebration, and excellence, the School is well-positioned to take advantage of the national climate that recognizes a critical need for more and better educated nurses and innovative solutions to the nation’s healthcare challenges. 

Ideal Experience

  • Exceptional academic and scholarly credentials, including the background and experience that will allow the individual to make a significant contribution to the growth of the research program at SON and the excellence of its educational programs.
  • Successful experience in baccalaureate and higher degree programs in nursing, including program development and financial acumen.
  • Demonstrated success in developing external relationships and external sources of support and a track record or exposure to fundraising.
  • Strong record of research/scholarship or demonstrated success fostering the growth of a research mission. 
  • Significant leadership experience with the ability to inspire through an open and approachable management style; a track record of faculty growth and development.
  • Previous success in establishing respectful and mutually reinforcing relationships across programs, centers, schools, and constituencies to advance the School’s interests.
  • Strong commitment to anti-racism and advancing School and University diversity, inclusion, and equity goals.
  • The ability and experience to articulate a compelling and distinctive institutional value proposition while generating excitement and support for institutional accomplishments, goals and aspirations.
  • Knowledge of health care systems and supportive of interprofessional care and education.
  • Currently licensed, or eligible for RN licensure in the state of Virginia, hold a graduate degree in nursing, and hold a doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree in nursing or a related field; and accomplishments that would qualify for appointment at the rank of professor with tenure at the School.
