University of Alabama at Birmingham — Assistant Professor, Department of Theatre

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Theatre seeks a full-time Tenure Track Assistant Professor to begin August 2022. Teaching responsibilities for the position will focus primarily on Scenic Design and general design courses. This position will also provide scenic designs for two to three department productions per year. Knowledge and facility with current pedagogical theatre practices are strongly desired. 

Applicants should have demonstrated experience in an inclusive pedagogical philosophy and practice; the ability to collaborate as a member of an artistic team; and must possess excellent written, visual, and communication skills. Recruitment, advising, and mentoring of students and participation in various departmental, college, and university committees and activities is expected. Continuing professional activities and/or continued research in the discipline is also expected.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Theatre offers serious student intensive studies in Musical Theatre (BFA), Design/Technology (BA Pre-Professional Concentration), Performance (BA Pre-Professional Concentration), and General Theatre Studies (BA). Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), the Department of Theatre at UAB is dedicated to developing the next generation of theatre artists, technicians, managers, and scholars. The department consists of 13 full-time faculty members and 4 full-time professional production specialists. The department’s production season includes five mainstage productions, studio productions, and four touring companies. Productions are built-in professionally run studios and shops and performed in two state-of-the-art performance venues.

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA in Theatre

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years teaching in higher education preferred.  Professional experience in the field.
