What we want
We are pleased to announce this great opportunity to join our unit serving in our Enterprise IT Technologist position. We envision this role will be a senior resource, utilizing experience in virtualization and cloud infrastructure to perform services. This individual will also provide subject matter expertise on design, configuration, implementation, and management aspects of cloud (including virtualized server and storage infrastructure) environments. They will support development of the Aggie Innovation Platform (AIP) infrastructures and platforms, including Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and the on-campus AggieCloud. A comprehensive summary of their duties include:

  • Routinely researching, designing, and recommending enterprise-level strategy.
  • Routinely providing technical leadership and guidance for the design and deployment of new enterprise-wide technologies.
  • Serving on enterprise level committees to develop technical standards and direction.
  • Providing technical oversight for the mentoring, training, and development of other employees in the same area of technical specialization.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Twelve years of experience in multiple technology areas such as system administration, compute virtualization, DevOps, collaborative software development, customer support, application support, project management, database administration, system reporting, access management, system security, and/or disaster recovery.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Degree in information technology field.
  • Extensive experience deploying system architectures in either public cloud environments (Google, Azure, and AWS) or using Hypervisor Type 1 and 2 solutions (ESXi, KVM, Xen, Hyper-V).
  • Extensive experience with network protocols and theory (TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, MAC addresses, IPV4, IPv6, NAT, PAT, , DNS, OSI layers, load balancing, etc.).
  • Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes containers, and related technologies.
  • Practical experience and oversight of Microsoft, Linux, and Mac operating systems (Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, Windows 10, Linux (CentOS, RedHat, Ubuntu), Mac OS X).
  • Considerable programming experience with server-side scripting languages, such as Node.js, Python, Ruby, Go, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Considerable experience with Microsoft Active Directory and OpenLDAP. Experience using databases, particularly BigQuery, MySQL or MS-SQL.
  • Experience interfacing with and integrating data transactions through REST APIs.
  • Experience consuming and managing cloud web services (Azure, Microsoft Graph, and Google APIs in particular).
  • Practical experience with automation technologies, such as Ansible, Chef and/or Puppet.
  • Experience utilizing Hashicorp Terraform, Packer, and Vault.
  • Demonstrative experience at the long-term maintenance of highly complex and highly interdependent system architectures.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • ITIL Foundations, PMP, or similar certifications.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strategic industry related skills to include, in-depth knowledge of the global IT industry and trends, advanced knowledge of IT security regulations, and advanced knowledge of current and emerging IT industry issues and trends.
  • Considerable knowledge of  Microsoft Active Directory and OpenLDAP.

  • Practical familiarity with DevOps methodologies.
  • High degree of knowledge of  Docker, Kubernetes containers, and related technologies.
  • High Degree of knowledge of Microsoft, Linux, and Mac operating systems (Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, Windows 10, Linux (CentOS, RedHat, Ubuntu), Mac OS X).

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Architecture Design and Consulting – Leads the strategic and long-term analysis on a specific and specialized technology and organization needs.  Develops alternate project plans, problem resolutions, and budget projections based on enterprise stakeholder needs and makes recommendations.  Establishes strategic quantity standards, procedures, and guidelines for design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise solutions.  Contributes to the planning of the overall organizational IT strategy. Solves unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the enterprise’s IT services and products.
  • Complex Program Management and Project Implementation – Participates as a top-level technical expert in leading multiple consulting projects or a single large/complex project and ensures the success of enterprise-level application rollouts.  In collaboration with the Project Management Office, oversees the use of established project management protocols.  Directs the analysis of project needs and risks, and recommend solutions.  Oversees the development project or area budgets.  Oversees the tracking expenditures and revenues.  Prioritizes, schedules, and directs the activities of a large or multiple strategic project team/s.  Directs the development of strategic project or task plans, resource estimates, and schedules.  Oversees the coordination of activities with the management of other organizational units and vendors.  Oversees the preparation of project documentation and reports for clients and/or management.  Oversees and coordinates the evaluation, selection, and purchase of strategic computing resources and/or consulting services.  Directs the selection, prioritization, and review of research projects to achieve organizational strategy.  Develops novel and repeatable solutions for complex projects.
  • Security Assessment and Risk Mitigation – Anticipates internal and/or external business security threats and business continuity challenges and/or regulatory issues. Recommends process, product, or service improvements and risk reduction strategies when appropriate. Facilitates a partnership with, as well as accurately documents and communicates any threats, vulnerabilities and failures of technologies under management to the IT Security Operations and Risk & Compliance teams.
  • Personnel Management and Leadership – Recruits, hires, and supervises a variety of technical, support, and/or management staff.  Enforces ethical, regulatory, and performance standards.  Oversees and manages personnel issues.  Provides technical oversight for the mentoring, training, and development of other employees in the same area of technical specialization.
  • Strategic Collaboration and Partnerships – Collaborates with enterprise stakeholders to coordinate the development of specifications within service-based solutions.  Maintains, establishes, and develops new strategic partnerships with executive management, stakeholders, customers, and vendors.  Serves as a strategic technical resource for other technical teams or organizations.  Serves as a chair or senior member of an information resource team responsible for setting technical standards and strategic direction.  Typically participates in industry/knowledge reference groups.
  • Documentation – Supervises the development of standard operating procedures for strategic research teams.  Oversees the approval and coordination of documentation provided to executive management, partner support teams, customers, stakeholders, and vendors.
  • Professional Development – Participates in training and professional development sessions. Performs other duties as assigned.
