What we want
The Enterprise IT Technologist (Chief Network Engineer) serves as one of the enterprise’s top-level technical expert and consultant in the specialized field of networking.  Texas A&M is planning to upgrade the University’s campus network which includes over 400 buildings, 70K+ in students and millions of dollars in research annually.  This position will work directly with the campus community and internal leadership to design, install and manage a new next generation network for the Texas A&M community.  This position will serve on enterprise level committees to develop technical standards and direction. This position will also provide technical oversight for the mentoring, training, and development of other employees in the same area of technical specialization. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Twelve years working in large enterprise or university network environments and/or professional offices

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills
  • A deep understanding of segmentation of networks on a large scale
  • A deep understanding of network security in large enterprise or university networks

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Degree in information technology field
  • Twelve years working or designing enterprise or large university networks including data centers and large-scale wireless deployments

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A deep knowledge of MPLS, EVPN-VXLAN, BGP and other routing protocols
  • Great communication, documentation, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment
  • Strategic thinking, research, and planning skills to include: creativity/innovation, design theory, advanced systems theory, project portfolio management, strategic change management, risk management, strategic disaster recovery & business continuity, ROI analysis, integrating solutions, leveraging strategic resources, strategic partnering, conflict management, advanced change management
  • Skilled at developing discipline specific expertise in others, enterprise-level policies, and advanced technology research and design skills
  • Strategic industry related skills to include, in-depth knowledge of the global IT industry and trends, advanced knowledge of IT security regulations, and advanced knowledge of current and emerging IT industry issues and trends

  • CCIE and JNCIP

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Research and Planning – Leads the strategic and long-term analysis on specific and specialized technology and organization needs. Develops alternate project plans, problem resolutions, and budget projections based on enterprise stakeholder needs and makes recommendations. Establishes strategic quantity standards, procedures, and guidelines for design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise solutions. Contributes to the planning of the overall organizational IT strategy.
  • Problem Change Management – Anticipates internal and/or external business challenges and/or regulatory issues. Recommends process, product, or service improvements. Solves unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the enterprise’s IT services and products. Reviews and approves changes requested by the engineers.
  • Personnel Management and Leadership –Recruits, hires, and supervises a variety of technical, support, and/or management staff. Enforces ethical, regulatory, and performance standards. Will oversee and manage personnel issues. Provides technical oversight for the mentoring, training, and development of other employees in the same area of technical specialization. Holds weekly meetings with the engineers to review projects.
  • Research and Planning Project Management – Participates as a top-level technical expert in leading multiple consulting projects or a single large/complex project and ensuring the success of enterprise-level application rollouts.  In collaboration with the Project Management Office, oversees the use established project management protocols. Directs the analysis of project needs and risks and recommends solutions. Oversees the development project or area budgets. Oversees the tracking expenditures and revenues. Prioritizes, schedules, and directs the activities of a large or multiple strategic project team/s. Directs the development of strategic project or task plans, resource estimates, and schedules. Oversees the coordination of activities with the management of other organizational units and vendors. Oversees the preparation of project documentation and reports for clients and/or management. Oversees and coordinates the evaluation, selection, and purchase of strategic computing resources and/or consulting services. Directs the selection, prioritization, and review of research projects to achieve organizational strategy. Develops new solutions for complex projects. Works with Project Control on designs. Assigns engineers to projects for implementation. Attends constructions meetings. Reviews blueprints. Makes recommendations on technology.
  • Strategic Collaboration and Partnerships – Collaborates with enterprise stakeholders to coordinate the development of specifications based. Maintains, establishes, and develops new strategic partnerships with executive management, stakeholders, customers, and vendors. Serves as a strategic technical resource for other technical teams or organizations. Serves as a chair or senior member of an information resource team responsible for setting technical standards and strategic direction. Participates in industry/knowledge reference groups. Meets vendors to review technology roadmaps. Works with vendors on demos or labs to test new technology.
  • Documentation – Supervises the development of standard operating procedures for strategic research teams. Oversees the approval and coordination of documentation provided to executive management, customers, stakeholders, and vendors. Works with Project Control on Division 27 standards. Works with the engineers on documentation for SoP’s. Works with leadership on DR plans.
  • Professional Development – Participates in training and professional development sessions. Performs other duties as assigned.
