Summary Description
Full-time, tenure track position for teaching a full range of Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering courses within the department. This position may require teaching day and/or evening classes, weekend classes, in-person and online classes.

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by the incumbent(s)of any particular position.   1. Provide instruction to general education students, students who wish to major in physics, and students pursuing degrees in other science, math, and engineering disciplines
  1. Create course materials, such as syllabi, lectures, homework, quizzes, exams, lab manuals, etc.
  1. Evaluate and grade students' homework, laboratory work, and assignments
  2. Demonstrate and explain physical experiments during physical laboratory hours that develop the critical thinking skills of students
  3. Teach courses during evenings and/or weekends if required
  4. Work collegially with the faculty and staff of the division to advance student success
  5. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  6. Participate and collaborate in physics team, department, and division meetings
  7. Assist in curriculum development, updates, and revisions
  8. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs


  1. Commitment to student learning in a framework of equity and inclusion
  2. Ability to teach students pursuing major's preparation in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses as well as students fulfilling general education requirements in physical sciences, as assigned
  3. Knowledge of a variety of successful teaching techniques
  4. An understanding of current physics issues and trends and the ability to communicate those ideas to a variety of levels and interests. Willingness to actively participate and contribute to changes in the Physics program at department and team meetings
  5. Commitment to support gender and ethnically diverse students and students with disabilities enrolled in physics
  6. Ability to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress in the lab setting
  7. Ability to use teaching methods that engage all students actively in their own learning and encourage them to learn problem solving skills
  8. Ability to teach in both in-person and virtual environments
  9. Ability to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students and students with disabilities
  10. Ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills in both lab and virtual settings
  11. Willingness to work with both faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college, and District levels
  12. Ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy and modify techniques to engage students
  13. A familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of computer-based technology appropriate to the field of physics
  14. Commitment to the SBCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum
  15. Commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

Master's degree in physics, astronomy or astrophysics OR Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics OR the equivalent.
Experience that indicates a sensitivity to, and an understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and personnel.

  1. Teaching experience equivalent to at least one academic year
  2. Experience in two of these areas: astronomy, engineering, physics
  3. Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and diversity
